1 How does its chemistry affect the ocean’s characteristics?
Oceans Chemistry How does its chemistry affect the ocean’s characteristics? Engage and Explore- Float your Boat activity! Explain- Notes! Elaborate- Place the salt water in a container with freshwater. What will happen to the water? Assess- How does the water

2 Lab- Float My Boat What effect does dissolving salt in water have on an egg’s ability to float? Observe what happens to the egg as you dissolve the salt in the cup of water. Use the least amount of salt as possible to see results. Caution: Be careful of the egg. Do not drop it. Clean up Dump the solution into the beaker in the first sink. Wipe down your station.

3 What is the salinity of the ocean?
Salinity- the concentration of dissolved salts in water. Its salinity comes from dissolved minerals in the rock. Salinity is constant but can change in areas where there is a lot of evaporation or near large freshwater sources such a rivers or glaciers.

4 What are the effects of salinity on the ocean?
Decreases the freezing point of water. Increases the buoyancy of objects in the ocean. Buoyancy is the ability to float.

5 How does the ocean change as you descend to floor?
Oceans become colder and more dense. Dissolved oxygen levels decrease. Pressure begins to increase. For every 33 feet (10.06 meters) you go down, the pressure increases by 14.5 psi. In the deepest ocean, the pressure is equivalent to the weight of an elephant balanced on a postage stamp, or the equivalent of one person trying to support 50 jumbo jets!

6 Summary- 30 or Less Write a summary of your notes in 30 words or less.
