The Romans appointed a governor/ procurator to rule over different areas. At the time of Jesus: Pontius Pilate was the governor of Judea & Samaria Herod Antipas was the governor of Galilee

The Messiah The Messiah was the chosen one sent by God who would free the Jews from Roman rule. Messianic expectation is the hope of the Jewish people that a new leader, a Messiah, would bring them to freedom.

Messianic Expectations
Many Jews expected that the Messiah would be a king, someone wealthy and powerful like King David. Others expected that the Messiah would be a great warrior, someone brave and courageous who would use force if necessary to drive the Romans out.

Messianic Expectations
Jews believed the Messiah: Would be a powerful king-like figure. Would free them from foreign rulers. Would bring God’s peace and justice to all. Today: Christians believe that Jesus is the Messiah. Jews believe that the Messiah is yet to come.
