3. Background.
From 1832 the British political scene underwent great political change that was slowly making Britain more democratic.
Through out this period we see greater steps in extending the Franchise and the political system (participation and representation) being transformed.
Can you name some of these reforms?

4. The Main Parties at the Beginning of the 20th Century.
Conservatives (Tories)
Liberals (Whigs)
The liberals were the dominant party in Scotland before 1914 as they were to seen to be a working class party.
1910: Liberals had won 57 of the 70 Scottish seats.
So, why were they so Popular?

5. Novelist, Lord Tweedsmuir (John Buchan):
"Liberals alone understood and sympathised with the poor."
Yet he was a conservative!

7. How Important was the Labour Party Before 1914?
The party Failed to make a big impression as the Liberals still won the working voters support.
1910: There were only three Scottish Labour MPs out of the 42 British Labour MPs.
1914: There were only 8 Labour candidates in the National elections.
Yet in ten years the Labour Party became the governing party in Britain.

8. Scottish Identity.
Although the was a strong sense of a Scottish Identity, most Scots thought of themselves as British and were willing to be a part of Britain and its Empire.
