The user interface is activated via the website, i.e. through the Theme Tree of the pre-defined tables by clicking on the table/graph icon. The data, codes, labels etc. should be fetched from the XML-files of the so called predefined tables available on the website. Most of the predefined data sets only have two dimensions, in most cases Time and Geo, but not necessarily these two. A number of predefined sets contain three dimensions (stacked table); they should NOT be included in this project. As for the Geo it should be taken into account that the user interface should also be capable of handling predefined data sets at the regional level below the country level. The user interface will open in a new small window (quarter of the page) which can be maximized to full screen, thereby permitting also to have several tables (or Graphs or Maps) open at the same time (for instance for reasons of comparison). The user interface should not require significant pre-installation on user’s PCs. The defaults of the tables, graphs and Maps should be traceable for external search-engines! The first working prototype should be in English. Choosing one of the subjects under the Theme Tree of the predefined tables by clicking on the icons will not open up only a table but a first basic new user interface integrating various displays (tables, graphs, maps) of fixed data sets.

2 The user interface opens by default with a Table view (Table tab active).
The permanent elements of the window are from top to bottom and left to right: Tabs for major access operations in order to access the predefined data set. Although displayed, the tab “Related Links” should be left out. These tabs provide the main controls for viewing a the predefined data set chosen, namely as a Table, as a Graph or as a Map. Clicking on the Eurostat logo opens up the Home page On the separation line to the dynamic data the following elements are located: Copyright Notice Counter for selected cells of the table in process (NOT to be implemented in this stage, so can be left out) Icons (note: If views from certain data sets are not available, the buttons are grayed out. In general the set of icons can differ depending on which Tab is activated. Each icon should have a tool-tip when the cursor passes the icon. For the Table Tab there are the following icons: Table view (default) Chart view (LEAVE OUT) Map view (LEAVE OUT) Meta data view (methodological info) Table Information view (Update information) Download options (for instance to Excel) Print (including preview) Bookmark/Save URL (for instance under Favorites) Personalization (LEAVE OUT) The title of the table can be found in the XML file. The explanation under the table name, however, has to be retrieved from the TMT. Contrary to what is shown in the slide, the table should also include the labels (and if too long the code) of the dimensions (e.g. Geo or Time). The headers of the table (e.g. 2004m10 or Euro-zone) should show only labels (no codes). In case the table exceeds the page view, a scroll bar should appear such that the upper part of the page and table header remain stable. At the bottom of the table the footnotes/flags should appear as is already currently the case on the website. For the Graph and Maps the footnotes do not apply The tabs will change in color when activated/selected The color setting should be in line with the website. Should it include a horizontal colored ruler and if so should it start as a default on the row of the MS related to the user’s origin? This screen appears when you activate the node of the Theme tree for predefined data sets. The table resembles the existing one, however, without its current icons contained within the table. Besides the Table tab (active as default) there is a tab for Graphs and MAPS. Basic functions (print, download, methodology, update info, bookmark) are placed under the icons. Non-applicable icons are to be removed. Table includes a scroll bar for not loosing sight of table headings, tabs and icons (i.e. navigation tools).

3 Clicking on the Graph tab immediately shows a bar graph with all the Geo’s (Y-axe of the table) displayed which are available in the dataset. The number labels for Time (X-axe of the table) is by default two (or one in case there is only one period available in total). The icons related to the graph are: Bar chart (is the default when the Graph tab is activated) Column chart (not displayed in the slides, for the column chart the same principles apply as for the bar chart with the exception of the scroll bar which is replaced by arrows (=> see line chart slide for the arrow example) Line chart Scatter plot (although not displayed in the slide, this icon should be included) Meta data view (methodological info); opens up the same info as was the case for the Table Table Information view (Update information); idem Download options view (for instance to Excel); gif and/or other commonly used formats Print (including preview), similar as the Table print Bookmark/Save URL (for instance under Favorites), similar as the Table bookmark. In case the graph exceeds the page view, a scroll bar should appear such that the upper part of the page and the X-axe remain stable. Customization functions are hidden under the toolbox button (see next slide) When you pass a bar (of a country) the bar is highlighted (as is already the case in the current graph module) and the associated value and codes/labels are shown in a pop-up close to the cursor. As default only the latest (I.e.newest) two periods should be shown, or equivalently the latest two labels from the column dimension of the Table. As a default it should include all labels of the row dimension of the Table (in most cases thus all the Geo labels). If available the unit of the values shown (% in this case) should be displayed on the X-axe. The default graph view: bar chart with Geo as Y-axe and Time as Legend (only two most recent periods. Contrary to the example the default protocol order of the Geo should be presented top-down instead of bottom-up. Scroll bar is only displayed if applicable, that is if the graph is bigger than the graph-window, for instance in the case of regions. Special care is needed in that case for the printing.

This page is activated after clicking on the customization toolbox. The toolbox opens a box on the right side of the screen. At the same time the graph should be squeezed such that it fits on the left side (see next slide). The default toolbox contains four functions: Choice whether to display labels (e.g. United Kingdom, = default) or codes (e.g. UK) or both (e.g. UK United Kingdom). The graph re-freshes after changed setting. Possibility to switch the dimensions (Time/Geo) from Y-axe to Legend or vice versa. Time as Legend is the default. The graph re-freshes after changed setting. Possibility to change the order of the Y-axe (in this case the Geo). The default is the protocol order, which is the same as the order of the table. (see next slide for its functionality). Customize graph data: contains two Tabs representing the dimensions included in the graph (Geo and Time). In the slide the Time tab is activated and it shows the default setting (latest two periods), a setting which can be altered by clicking (or “sweeping”) the code/label boxes. The default Geo setting can be changed as well by activating the associated Tab and by re-selection of the labels. After clicking on Update graph the new settings will be activated and a re-freshed graph appears on the left side. The labels on the Y-axe should follow the same order as in the Table (so EU 25 at the top contrary to what is shown on the slide). The default graph view: bar chart with Geo as Y-axe and Time as Legend (only two most recent periods. Contrary to the example the default protocol order of the Geo should be presented top-down instead of bottom-up. The number of codes/labels of the Legend is limited to 12 (or less). The display of the graph can be smaller than the full graph itself (this is important for the print action). Scroll bars are only displayed if applicable.

5 There is a default map view when users click on the MAP tab, covering all countries (with EU values in the Legend) and a single period/time series (latest one, in this case 2005m9). In principle the MAP can refer to countries as well as to more detailed regions, however, without mixed levels of details. Pop-up appears with the value and label of the country/region when passing the country/region with the mouse. Tool tips should be included for the navigation icons of the MAP. The icons in the upper right corner have a same functionality as described for the Table. The links to Methodology and Update info are identical, whereas downloads, prints and bookmarks should of course refer to the specific formats of MAPS. More detailed information on the Specs are described in the Word document “MAPSpec”.
