4 Prior to the 1800s, most of Latin America was made up of Spanish colonies.

5 In colonial Latin America, the peninsulares controlled most of the political, economic, and social power.  (white Europeans)  (white European descent)  (mixed white/ African/Indian ancestry)

6 The Napoleonic Wars of the early 1800s weakened Spain’s power and caused the creoles and mestizos to become discontented in the Spanish colonies. Napoleon Bonaparte

7 Ideas from the Enlightenment and the American and French Revolutions inspired the creoles and mestizos to revolt.

8 This resulted in Latin American nations winning their independence during the early 1800s.
