1 An initiative to support the development of horticulture in the Pacific islands:
Proposed by the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS) in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) Ian Warrington ISHS

2 Opportunities for horticulture in the Pacific islands
Main Pacific crops are horticultural species – taro, yams, plantains... Increased production and trade in high-value horticultural products declared priority for: economic development health and livelihoods correcting trade imbalances

3 Constraints to horticulture in the Pacific islands
Access to appropriate technologies for sustainable intensification of horticulture Lack of formal R&D capacity in horticulture

4 Dialogue between SPC and ISHS
Began in late 2009 Focused on possibilities for mobilising resources of ISHS in support of horticultural R&D in the Pacific islands

ISHS was established in 1959 to: build & maintain knowledge, skills & biological resources in support of horticulture worldwide

Objective: to promote and encourage research and education in all branches of horticultural science and to facilitate cooperation and knowledge transfer on a global scale through its symposia and congresses, publications and scientific structure

16 ISHS regional membership
To be aware of horticulture activities in the region To appoint up to three country/region representatives on the Council of the ISHS Through the representatives on Council, to meet with representatives of other member countries and regions To provide the framework for scientific organizations within the region to organize ISHS sanctioned international symposia and conferences (To have the possibility) to host the bi-annual meeting of the ISHS Council, the annual ISHS Executive Committee meeting and/or the every fourth year organized International Horticultural Congress. Applications will be considered during its meetings by the Council. To contribute to policy discussions of the ISHS and to elect the Board of Directors.

SPC to monitor ISHS information sources and advise partners of relevant opportunities SPC to seek support and establish a fund to facilitate participation of Pacific horticulturalists in symposia Help participants to prepare high-quality papers and posters

To establish an internship scheme providing work experience in institutions with strong horticultural R&D programs To build towards a major show-case for Pacific horticulture at IHC 2014 in Brisbane

22 At IHC2014 in Brisbane... Pacific horticulturalists representing 'Oceania' will co-host the event, with their counterparts from Australia and New Zealand; symposia, workshops and other events will be organized to highlight Pacific horticulture.

Recommendations Heads of Agriculture and Forestry Services are invited to: note the steps already taken by ISHS, SPC and partner organizations to promote collaboration; nominate Focal Points in each country to promote exchange of information for the further development of horticultural R&D;

Recommendations Heads of Agriculture and Forestry Services are invited to: endorse the proposed actions to promote capacity building and awareness, including promoting the active participation of Pacific horticulturalists in relevant ISHS symposia, the establishment of an internship scheme for on-the-job training and of a fund to support these actions; and...
