1 Database for water use statistics
Developed 2005 Grant Action No

2 Database for water use statistics
Background Objectives Tasks Method Data Technical implementation Conclusions

3 Database for water use statistics Background
Reporting EU/OECD Joint Questionnaire, Regional Q EEA reporting National reporting Various data sources for the reporting Various ways of reporting the data Various data for the reporting Various variable definitions

4 Database for water use statistics Background
Briefly Reporting has been a mess! Time consuming and difficult to report data of high quality

5 Database for water use statistics Objectives
Facilitate future JQ-reporting Reporting on environmental objectives Calculating data for various reports Data are secured for the future Server system with routines of backup Storage of data is secured

6 Database for water use statistics Tasks
inventory of data sources for JQ-reporting listing variables and data format modelling the database constructing a database compatible with the system at Statistics Sweden constructing an interface for registration of data importing existing data into the database designing functions for data extraction according to JQ     documentation of the system report writing

7 Database for water use statistics Method
All available data sources for JQ-reporting were identified and analysed Variables and data formats were listed

8 Database for water use statistics Method
Data tables included in the database: Agricultural water use Water for livestock Water for irrigation Public water supply Public water delivery to municipalities Public water purification plants and points of withdrawal Water for households, private supply Water for industry Nuclear energy plants

9 Database for water use statistics Data
Most recent available data Data originates from years in a range from 1985 to 2004 Geographical levels (parish, municipality, county and water district) Type of water: surface water, ground water, non fresh water (marine and brackish water) and water of unknown origin Data on wastewater has not been included in the first version of the database

10 Data was imported from different sources
AF01 Livestock Subject actor <<System>> WaterDatabase AF03 Industry AF05 Water and sewage standard AF06 Municipality AF07 Codes AF02 Irrigation AF04 Nuclear power plant Data was imported from different sources

11 The database consists of the following tables

12 Database for water use statistics Technical implementation
The application was developed in Visual Studio.Net and the DBMS MS SQL Server 2000 has been used. For instance to import data on livestock, choose the alternative “Import, Jordbruk, Djurhållning” as shown in the application user interface below.

13 Database for water use statistics Technical implementation

14 Database for water use statistics Conclusions
Prerequisites: integration can be performed between two tables only if they are aggregated to the same geographical level. Waste water: no clear connection between the waste water statistics and other water statistics at Statistics Sweden. Needs a lot more manual preparations to manage the JQ-demands. Future work.

15 Database for water use statistics Conclusions
Possible improvements: To add data on municipal sewage treatment plants and waste water. A good starting point would be to include data on waste water for the most water-consuming industries, which already are incorporated in the file "Water for industry“ To add data on water accounts

16 Database for water use statistics Conclusions
Possible improvements: To add data on water use for private and public services outside urban areas More recent and more accurate data is also desirable
