Lesson Topic(s): Composing and Decomposing Numbers to 10 Week of: 11/12-11/16 Objectives: Students will learn a variety of ways to make 10. TEKS: 2 (I) compose and decompose numbers up to 10 with objects and pictures Essential Question(s): How can I decompose a number to make it easier to work with? Is there a patters for ways to make 10? Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Lesson Plan Students will use manipulative to determine different ways to make 10. Create a turkey with one of the ways to make 10 and write a numbers sentence. Compose and decompose a turkeys feathers to show different ways to make 10. Students will learn the patter to making 10 using the Rainbow to 10 strategy. Work with partners using the rainbow strategy to complete number sentences. Using cubes they will show and document ways to make 10. Play Ten Turkeys game to practice making 10 skills. Vocabulary Compose Decompose Plus Equals Addends sum Higher order questions What do you remember about making 10? How would you demonstrate a way to make 10? How is 4+6=10 similar to 6+4=10? What is the problem with this number sentence? 2+4=10 What is you favorite strategy to make 10? Why? Assessment Strategy Students will create a turkey with the feathers showing a way to make 10. Students will work in partners to play a game using strategies to make 10. Students will create number sentences using the rainbow strategies. Students will show the teacher two ways to make 10. (independently)
