GIFTED GAZETTE 3.4 Jan. 22nd - Jan. 26th What we’re learning this week… Test Schedule Reading: This week we will… read through Chapter 9 in Because of Winn Dixie use details from the text to create character posters that represent the appearance, words, thoughts, feelings, and actions of a character (graded assignment due Friday) use a nonfiction text about unlikely friends, and identify the main idea and key details in the text. read self-selected novels about friendship in Literature Circles Language/Writing/Vocabulary: This week we will… use a mentor sentence to apply grammar skills with concentration on simple, compound, and complex sentences Unit 3 Vocabulary Workshop research inventions of African Americans and write about how those inventions have influenced our lives. (a few students will be selected to read their essays on morning announcements in February:) Spelling: utilize dictionary/thesaurus/dictionary.com references Math: This week we will… continue to partition shapes into parts with equal areas and express each part as a unit fraction with a denominator of 2,3,4,6, and 8 build understanding of equivalent fractions and comparing fractions <, >, = (Refer to class webpage for fraction websites and activities) create art using fractional pieces master 1-12’s facts with “Fluency Friday” speed test: 25 correct facts in 1 minute, 40 seconds Project of the Week (P.O.W.): due Friday Research: Grandparent Interviews about Friendship: look for directions and timeframe for assignment in Wednesday test folder! Reading: Cold-Read comprehension test with short-answer questions Participation graded Winn Dixie Character Poster assignment due Friday Orange Vocabulary Workshop: Unit 3 multiple choice test Language: Mentor Sentence Assessment with concentration on identifying simple, compound, and complex sentences Informative Essay Writing Spelling: Assessed through writing. Students are expected to consult dictionaries, peer editors, and computer resources to monitor spelling when writing. Math: graded fractional art project multiplication Facts 1-12 speed test test on fractions THURSDAY Please study multiplication facts nightly, especially if your child is not fluent with 1-12 multiplication facts (3- second rule). Fluency with multiplication facts is a critical goal in third grade math. Our goal for Friday’s test is 25 problems in 1 minute and 40 seconds to achieve mastery. Try using mathfactspro.com or mathfactscafe.com for nightly fluency practice. A note from the teachers We are in need of 30 pizza boxes for a kid-favorite enrichment project on fractions. If you would be willing to purchase or donate, please let us know. Thank you so much! It might be time to replenish pencils, erasers, looseleaf, highlighters, crayons, and markers.
