1 *Welcome* Lake View Elementary 2nd Grade Parent Night

2 Brittany Egbert Grew up in Auburn!
Graduated from WWU with degrees in English and Elementary Education, with a Reading Endorsement. Received Master of Education Degree in Reading and Literacy . Previously taught Kindergarten at NBE and then taught 1st grade for the last six years! Got married two years ago! We love to hike, bike, run, drink coffee, read, and spend time with family.

3 Extra Support Your kiddos will be supported by me each day all year. They will also benefit HUGELY from the amazing support of their own families! Volunteers, our ELL Teacher, and our LAP Reading Program serve as additional supporters giving kids the one-on-one attention they learn so well from!

4 Second Grade is a year of growth and learning new skills.
Learning is a continuous and developmental process. Hands-on activities and interactions are critical to young learners. Understanding takes time and practice.

5 Daily 5 literacy practice: Reading instruction focused on 3 key areas:
Balanced Literacy Daily 5 literacy practice: Read to Self Read to Others Listen to Reading Word Work Writing Reading instruction focused on 3 key areas: Decoding Fluency Comprehension Vocabulary

6 Read to Self – “The best way to become a better reader is to practice each day, with books you choose, on your just right reading level.” Read to Someone – “Reading to someone allows for time to practice strategies, helping you work on fluency and expression, check for understanding, hear your own voice, and share in the learning community.” Listen to Reading – “We hear examples of good literature and fluent reading. We learn more words, thus expanding our vocabulary and becoming better readers.” Daily 5 Reading

7 Journaling – “Just like reading, the best way to become a better writer is to practice writing each day.” Writing – Prewrite, Rough Draft, Edit, Revise, Final Draft, Publish, Share. Word Work - Teach children to read, spell, and use high-frequency words. Teach word family patterns which allow children to read and spell many other words. Daily 5 Writing

8 How you can help your child become a reader:
Read to your child regularly. Have your child read to you. Take your child to the library. Read signs and other text with your child at home and in the community. Model your love of reading!
