1 Lequel et les liens

2 Objectives: Students will be able to answer the question ‘Avec quoi?’

3 Prepositions A preposition in many languages is referred to as the « dative » case. So, imagine you were on a date with someone eating with a two by four. English prepositions: to, by, for, at, with

4 En Français: Les prépositions sont: à (at, to), par(by), pour(for), avec (with), vers (toward), dans (in)

5 So, in these French sentences:
Je vais avec Marie. Tu cours à Richard Il jette vers Joachim where is the preposition?

6 avec à vers

7 Keep the last few slides in mind
Keep your list of prepositions in front of you

8 New Rule: A preposition (à, pour, par, vers, avec) can NEVER come at the end of a sentence. Voici le parc je vais vers - DOES NOT WORK (here’s the parc I go toward)

9 What do we do with prepositions at the end?
Voici le parc je vais vers - DOESNT WORK If you wind up having a preposition at the end, you need to follow it with a form of lequel Which form of lequel do I use? look at the noun, is it a le, la, les word? It’s a « le » word, so use lequel. here’s where we are (remember, lequel means « which »): Voici le parc je vais vers lequel. (Here is the parc I go towards which). DOES THAT MAKE ANY SENSE YET? NO? Let’s keep going.

10 Let’s Brainstorm a minute:
Here is the parc I go towards which How could we reorganize these words to make sense without putting the preposition « towards » at the end?

11 Ideas Here is the parc towards which I go
Any other ideas? Remember, the « towards » cannot go at the end.

12 En Français, Let’s make this work:
Voici le parc je vais vers lequel. (Here is the parc I go towards which) Let’s turn it into « here is the park towards which I go » Voici le parc vers lequel je vais.

13 One more example: How would I say: Here is the pen I write with?
Let’s translate literally « Voici le stylo J’écris avec » There is a preposition last! SO, let’s put a form of lequel after it. the noun in the sentence is a « le » word, so let’s use lequel. Voici le stylo J’écris avec lequel (here is the pen I write with which) How can we make sense of this? « here is the pen with which I write » Voici le stylo avec lequel J’écris.

14 In your notes: Refaites en français: Here is the house I live in
Here is the pen I like to write with I like the girl I dance with I like the person (la personne) I go out with.
