1 Wednesday, December 10th, 2014 HW: Agenda Questions Objective: We will be able to explain coulombic attraction. Standard: IOD 402 Catalyst: A. seed masses are the same. B. germination rates on ant waste piles are the same. C. percentages of elaiosome mass per seed are the same. D. rates of production of seeds after 1 year are the same. Classroom expectations: Wear Kenwood ID. Cell phones, music players, and headphones are put away. Food is disposed of or put away. Dressed appropriately. 4 Catalyst/Announcements
Agenda Catalyst/Announcements Finish notes on shorthand electron configuration POGIL: Coulombic Attraction Notes: Coulombic Attraction We will review homework TOMORROW

5 Noble Gas notation Electron configurations can be written in noble gas configuration The noble gas of each row becomes a placeholder for the configurations that come after. This is kind of like a checkpoint in a game you start your configuration from after each noble gas.

6 Practice Write the configuration of Argon 1s22s22p63s23p6
Now write the configuration of calcium 1s22s22p63s23p64s2 Now we can use the symbol [Ar] in brackets as a placeholder [Ar]4s2

7 Noble gas configuration
You can only use noble gases for shorthand notation

8 White board [Kr]5s2 [He]2s2 [He]2p5 [Xe]6s1 [Rn]7s2
Write short hand for the following Strontium Beryllium Fluorine Cesium Radium [Kr]5s2 [He]2s2 [He]2p5 [Xe]6s1 [Rn]7s2

9 Whiteboard [He]2p2 [Ne]3p2 [Ar]4s2 [Ne]3s2
Write the noble gas configuration for the following Carbon Silicon Ca Mg [He]2p2 [Ne]3p2 [Ar]4s2 [Ne]3s2

10 POGIL: Change Up Today you will work with your elbow partner ONLY!!
Read the questions aloud to your elbow partner and discuss your answers. Be prepared to share your answers with the class.

11 POGIL instructions Answer ALL questions on the first page
Problem 4c MUST have the words distance AND attraction used in the sentence. You have 10 minutes Answer ALL questions on the second page Problem 7b MUST have the words protons AND attraction used in the sentence.

12 Coulombic Attraction ***Write notes on notebook paper behind your worksheet! 86

13 Coulombic Attraction Coulombic attraction: Opposite charges attract.
Like charges repel. **Draw this picture in your notes!!

14 Coulombic Attraction Think about it: Why don’t the protons in atoms nucleus repel each other? Chem team!!! I know my explanations are very over-simplified and so if you think of a better way to word these challenge questions PLEASE feel free to edit/change.  I just wanted to include them because students ask these every year in class.

15 Coulombic Attraction Simplified Answer: They do! This is why it’s so difficult to make “super heavy” elements with a nucleus that contains more than 109 protons. Chem team!!! I know my explanations are very over-simplified and so if you think of a better way to word these challenge questions PLEASE feel free to edit/change.  I just wanted to include them because students ask these every year in class.

16 Coulombic Attraction Simplified Answer:
It is thought that the neutrons may help “buffer” the repulsion force. Also, there exists a “strong nuclear force” that exists which helps keep the nucleus together. Chem team!!! I know my explanations are very over-simplified and so if you think of a better way to word these challenge questions PLEASE feel free to edit/change.  I just wanted to include them because students ask these every year in class.

17 Coulombic Attraction Think about it: Why don’t the electrons fall towards the nucleus and stick to it? Chem team!!! I know my explanations are very over-simplified and so if you think of a better way to word these challenge questions PLEASE feel free to edit/change.  I just wanted to include them because students ask these every year in class.

18 Coulombic Attraction Simplified Answer: They begin to! Electrons are moving so fast with so much momentum that they have too much energy to fall too close to the nucleus. Chem team!!! I know my explanations are very over-simplified and so if you think of a better way to word these challenge questions PLEASE feel free to edit/change.  I just wanted to include them because students ask these every year in class.

19 Coulombic Attraction Attractions and Repulsions from Coulombic attraction are very complex in an atom.

20 Trends Think about it: How would Coulombic attraction change down a group on the periodic table? Why? Chem team!!! I know my explanations are very over-simplified and so if you think of a better way to word these challenge questions PLEASE feel free to edit/change.  I just wanted to include them because students ask these every year in class.

21 Trends Think about it: As you go DOWN a group the number of energy levels INCREASES The valence electrons are farther away from the nucleus

22 Trends Think about it: How would Coulombic attraction change across a period on the periodic table? Why? Chem team!!! I know my explanations are very over-simplified and so if you think of a better way to word these challenge questions PLEASE feel free to edit/change.  I just wanted to include them because students ask these every year in class.

23 Trends Think about it: As you go ACROSS the period the atomic number (# of protons) INCREASES However, the energy level with the valence electrons stays the same Chem team!!! I know my explanations are very over-simplified and so if you think of a better way to word these challenge questions PLEASE feel free to edit/change.  I just wanted to include them because students ask these every year in class.

24 Trends Coulombic attraction increases Coulombic attraction decreases
Chem team!!! I know my explanations are very over-simplified and so if you think of a better way to word these challenge questions PLEASE feel free to edit/change.  I just wanted to include them because students ask these every year in class.
