1 Paula’s Portfolio Second semester,

2 Central Idea The teacher and the student work together in the learning process. Children learn best through experience and teachers should be able to provide learning opportunities where the student uses his body and mind.

4 Role of the teacher: The role of the teacher is to be the facilitator in the classroom- she is the guide, leader, manager and the main player in providing learning to the students.

5 Role of the teacher: The teacher is the guide to the child’s learning by asking the children questions that would require them to think critically and out of the box. She guides the children in activities and would help them when they need it.

6 These activities help children think about the processes and make it meaningful for them by using their experiences and senses.

7 Role of the teacher: She leads the class in every learning opportunity to further aid in the child’s understanding of the concepts. She helps in making the concepts relevant to the children by making the children use their senses during the lessons through hands-on activities, drawings, and games.

8 In an activity where they were asked to draw the main character of the story and write her characteristics, the activity reinforced the concept of what a chicken looks like, and what happened in the story. The children were able to draw their own interpretation of Monica Dalosdalos, the main character of the story.

9 Role of the teacher: The teacher should also manage the classroom to help in providing the students a room where they are comfortable and where the room is rich of learning activities like posters, pictures and age-appropriate toys.

10 The classroom provides a colorful yet educational pictures and information that the children may pick up from looking at the pictures. For example, in this board, the children are introduced to the concepts of “bulkan”, “bundok”, and “burol”, and what they look like.

11 Role of the teacher: The teacher is the main player in providing learning opportunities for the students and she is responsible for maximizing the use of materials in the learning environment. It is the role of the teacher to provide learning activities like games and contests, experiments and fieldtrips, which will interest the students and further motivate them to learn.

12 The project in Makabayan helped the students learn about the different National symbols while reinforcing the concepts of these symbols. This project was displayed in the classroom, making it easier for the students to remember the concepts.

13 Role of the teacher: Another role of a teacher in a child’s learning is to instill a love for learning by making the class interactive and fun. The teacher should be loving, understanding, and patient when dealing with children and should also show a love for learning.

14 In one observation, the Religion teacher asked if there were students who were included in the Iglesia ni Cristo sect. A few students raised their hands and the teacher blurted out “Kaya pala matitigas ang ulo niyo eh.” This should not be the case in dealing with children, especially when talking about religion. A teacher should watch her actions and words because they students can already understand body language, and could pick up the bad action or words by the erring teacher.

15 Content: The content would focus on the social studies- knowing oneself and the community around them, and also know about the society they are in. Besides academic subjects, the teachers should teach morals and values. The students should be taught how to behave in class, respect for themselves and for others, and consider people as unique individuals. Each learning opportunity should have underlying lessons which the students can develop as they are exposed to every learning opportunity.

16 Journal Chart, 01/28-02/01 During Filipino time, the kids and I had an agreement whenever I read a story. Since they all know that they should keep quiet and listen while sitting properly, there are some instances when they forget what they do. We then had an agreement that if someone was noisy during Story time, then they would be the one to read the story in class. And when someone stood up without being told to, the student would then have to go in front and hold the book. This helped in making them remember how they should behave in class. The teacher should think of other ways to help the students remember how to behave in class. In having an agreement where the consequence was what the kids suggested, they make the rules more personal for them since they were part of the decision making.

17 The learning process: The content should be taught through experiential learning: fieldtrips, observations, and experiments.

18 For example, when teaching the kids how the sunlight affects plant’s growth, the teacher can plant monggo seeds in two pots and put one pot in a well-lighted place and the other pot in a dark place. Then ask the kids to water it everyday and after a week, ask them what are the differences between the plant with sunlight and the plant without. When teaching the alphabet, ask the students whose names starts with a specific letter. In doing this, you reinforce the concept of the letters while making them master the sounds.

19 During Nina’s lesson, the kids were excited because this was the first time they experienced building a puzzle that is about the lesson. The students were able to build the puzzles while the teacher discussed and reinforced the concepts through pictures.

20 The learning process and the classroom
The classroom should have colorful visuals, posters and age-appropriate toys and materials that would encourage them to use their bodies and eyes when inside the room.

21 The classroom is filled with colorful visuals that encourages the children to look at it and eventually reinforce the concepts in the visuals. The materials help the children understand the concepts better.

22 Assessment Since I believe in experiential learning, it is only fitting to assess the students’ understanding through their performance during experiments and fieldtrips. Another form of assessment would be worksheets that would help the teacher put a quantitative value for the activities. however, for the younger kids, the measurement would be solely based on how the children manifest the skills taught.

23 Role of the student One role of the student is to put into practical use what they have learned, thus making the information meaningful for them through the use of their senses, which aids in information processing.

24 The children learning the different days of the week through an action song. The use of the their body and their senses will help in making them remember the days and the sequence.

25 Role of the student: They are the ones who are responsible for their own learning by maximizing every learning opportunity given by the teacher and by applying the concepts in their lives.

26 In an activity where the kids were asked to describe their pet, Loren showed how much her pet means to her and what her experiences are. She makes the activity personal for her, thus making learning relevant to her and also to her classmates.

27 In summary… I believe that the student and the teacher should work together in order for learning to take place. The student should show that he or she is motivated to learn from every learning opportunity provided by the teacher. The teacher should see the student as a person who learns best when he or she experiences it and uses his body and mind in processing the information.

28 In summary… Learning is a very personal process because it can only happen when the person wants it to take place. Therefore, the teacher should instill a love for learning to her students so that they can maximize every learning opportunity provided.
