1 Do Now Glue in Adding & Subtracting in Scientific Notation sheet into to MSG (Keep this out – we are going to fill it in) Take out homework from Monday for review

2 Adding & Subtracting in Scientific Notation
Exponents are SAME 1.) If exponents same, add or subtract the coefficients and keep the power of 10. Examples: (3.5 x 105) (8.9 x 10-3) + (2.3 x 105) (6.3 x 10-3) 5.8 x x 10-3 2.) If needed, adjust decimal and exponent so answer is in scientific notation.

3 Adding & Subtracting in Scientific Notation
Exponents are DIFFERENT 1.) If exponents different, change to the largest exponent. Example: (3.5 x 106) + (2.3 x 105) 0.23 x 106 2.) Add or subtract coefficients and keep the common base. (3.5 x 106) + (0.23 x 106) 3.73 x 106 3.) If needed, adjust decimal and exponent so answer is in scientific notation. Change the term with smaller exponent to match the larger exponent. Exponent increased. Decimal decreased.

4 p. 30 in MSG Example: (9.21 x 108) + (8.2 x 108)

5 Change the term with smaller exponent to match the larger exponent.
p. 30 in MSG Example: (5 x 105) - (4.1 x 102) Change the term with smaller exponent to match the larger exponent.

6 Change the term with smaller exponent to match the larger exponent.
p. 30 in MSG Example: (7.1 x 10-3) - (2.5 x 10-4) Change the term with smaller exponent to match the larger exponent.

7 Change the term with smaller exponent to match the larger exponent.
p. 30 in MSG Example: (3.3) + (9.9 x 103) Change the term with smaller exponent to match the larger exponent.

8 Practice Homework: Practice A. Examples given for you.
Finish study guide (we will review tomorrow) UNIT 2B TEST FRIDAY Exponent rules Perfect Squares & Cubes and their roots Irrational & Rational Numbers Scientific notation

9 Complete on scratch paper
Ticket out the door Complete on scratch paper Solve. (2.64 x 10-5) + (8.59 x 10-7)

10 Warm-up

11 Practice

12 TOTD: Common Errors! Solve. (2.64 x 10-5) + (8.59 x 10-7)
Not checking answer to make sure it is in CORRECT (not imposter) scientific notation! Adding the numbers BEFORE making the exponents the same Moving the decimal the wrong way when trying to make the exponents the same. (If your exponent gets bigger, number gets smaller)

13 Adding & Subtracting Solve. (7.38 x 108) – (1.161 x 107)

14 Adding & Subtracting Solve. (9.3 x 10-5) – (3.25 x 10-3)

15 Adding & Subtracting Solve. (4.9 x 1018) + (5.8 x 1015)

16 Practice Reminder: UNIT 2B TEST THURSDAY
Work with table group to complete card sort by matching. Once you are finished have Mrs. Bullock come check you off. Work on study guide for the remainder of class! Come to class tomorrow with study guide questions. Reminder: UNIT 2B TEST THURSDAY Material covers p in MSG Exponent rules Perfect Squares & Cubes and their roots Scientific notation
