1 a) Coins b) Playing Cards c) Spinner d) Number Cube
That’s So Random! Write how each of the methods listed could be used to conduct a simulation of the number of female children in a family of 4 children. a) Coins b) Playing Cards c) Spinner d) Number Cube

2 Answers may vary. Suggestions: a) heads = F, tails = M, flip 4 coins b) Red = F, black = M, pick 4 cards, replacing card after each selection c) Using a spinner with an even number of slots, even numbers = F, odd numbers = M, spin 4 times d) Even number = F, odd number = M, roll 4 dice

3 Groups should write their answers on a poster!
1. For approximately minutes your group should explore your topic and talk about the following questions: 2. Describe in your own words what a Survey/Experimental/Observational study is. 3. Brainstorm 2 to 3 advantages and 2 to 3 disadvantages of your study 4. Create 2 to 3 scenarios for your study. Groups should write their answers on a poster!

4 Groups 1, 2, and 3 should display their posters on the wall with the windows.
Groups 4, 5, and 6 should display their posters on the wall opposite the windows.

5 Gallery Walk! During the walk, you must add to another group’s poster by putting a piece of new information on the sticky note. For example, you could write an advantage to observational studies that the original group did not. You could also pose a question or ask for clarification about a term or idea.

6 The Three Types of Statistical Studies
Surveys:  A study that uses a survey involves the use of a questionnaire to measure the characteristics and/or attitudes of people For example: Asking students their opinion about extending the school day.

7 Survey are administered questions to gather quantitative data about a particular population.
Used to collect quantitative info from a specific population or group. A survey is a detailed study tool that is used to gather information about individuals and their opinions by asking questions. A data collection tool used to get information about people around the world or in a certain area. Gathering data using questions about a specific subject. A survey is a data collection tool used to gather information about a specific individual or a large group

8 The Three Types of Statistical Studies
Observational studies In this study, individuals are observed and certain outcomes are measured, but no attempt is made to affect the outcome. For example, if a researcher gathered a group of people and asked them whether or not they took vitamin supplements and then measured the health of the people, this would be an observational study.

9 An observational study draws inferences about the possible effect of a treatment on subjects where the assignment of subjects into a treated group versus a control group is outside the control of the investigator. An observational study is a study that finds people who have a disease or condition that they are looking for and work backwards as to how they got the disease or condition and what caused it. An observational study is a study in which the investigator does not intervene in the care of the patient, but records outcomes when they occur. Observational data fits into either quantitative data or qualitative data. To get this data you must use your five senses to collect data on things like color, shape, size or amount. Draws inferences about possible effects of treatments on people. An observational study requires you to ask questions about the things around you and then use your senses to find out why things are the way they are.

10 The Three Types of Statistical Studies
Experiments:  This study uses treatments that are imposed prior to observation. For example: If the researcher gathered a sample of individuals, gave some of them vitamin supplements and then measured their health.

11 Experimental study uses a lot of cause and effect, it is a study in which a treatment, procedure, or program is intentionally introduced and a result or outcome is observed. Study in which a treatment, procedure, or program, is intentionally introduced and a result or outcome is observed. The testing of something by experiments where there is a control group and a group that has a changing variable. The groups are random An experimental study is the process of collecting data without knowing the outcome. A study in which a variable is intentionally introduced and it's outcome and results are observed. In an experimental study, the researcher surveys a sample population. After that happens, the researcher will manipulate that sample population. You then repeat the experiment to see how it changed the measurements.

12 Read the article “Chicken pox vaccine effective over long term, Kaiser study finds” and answer the questions on the back of the paper for homework.
