1 Writing A Literary Interpretation
Comp. II February 7, 2018 Writing A Literary Interpretation

2 Have ready for later in class today . . .
your choice(s) of literature to interpret / write about Why? What issue you are interested in discussing in your papers (this one and later ones)?

3 Why? It requires major critical thinking, which is important for upper level college classes - life - increased understanding situations - increased ability to analyze situations and make better / more informed choices

4 How? Read. Re-read. Think of connections to real life. Think of symbolisms. Think of theme. Think of characterizations. Think of purpose of words / diction. Think of historical and cultural influences.

5 How? Continued Re-read. Think of what is the significance of what you are saying. Why is this important?

6 How? Continued Find your evidence. Highlight or make notes of key quotes from the story that prove your point.

7 How? Continued Format your interpretation similar to any other well-organized essay. The introduction should have . . . broad hook bridge / background thesis Notice that there are no quotes in the introduction. Your evidence should be saved for the body paragraphs.

8 How? Continued The body paragraphs should include well-chosen and not too-long evidence. Avoid using a long quote just to take up half a page and thus eliminate the number of your words that appear in the paper. Be sure to fully explain quotes. Do not expect them to speak for themselves. The conclusion, as with any conclusion, should sum-up what you have said before and further support the importance.

9 Sample Read with me as I read it aloud.
Look for: structure, purpose, evidence

10 Let’s Hear from You What is (are) your choice(s) of literature to interpret / write about? Why? What issue are you interested in discussing in your papers (this one and later ones)?
