1 Jurassic Park Notes Shot Edit/Cut Jump Cut
From when the camera is turned on to when the camera is turned off. Edit/Cut The one-frame transition between two shots. Jump Cut A cut between two very similar shots Something small is different causing a jarring effect

2 Jurassic Park Notes Manufacturing Drama
Filmmakers have to construct scenes to achieve the highest potential dramatic effect. The audience needs the narrative fed to them slowly. “Real world” time does not work. We are TELESCOPING TIME Making a moment/event either shorter or longer in film Taking a moment that in real life would last fifteen seconds and turning it into an event or a scene that lasts five minutes (dinosaurs everywhere)

3 Jurassic Park Notes Cacophony Smash cut A big noise
The word used to describe Spielberg’s method of overlapping conversations. Makes the scene seem more “natural.” Smash cut A cut accompanied by a loud noise or bright flash

4 Jurassic Park Notes “Cut-to” moment
A moment where an important point is made, then the movie cuts to an example of that very point (“…Unless they (raptors) learn how to open doors – cut to: raptor opening a door)

5 Jurassic Park Notes Looking screen left/right theory
If someone is looking screen right they are in power, telling the truth, or winning. If someone is looking screen left they are losing, lying, or not in power. This image shows the hierarchy of importance of characters.

6 Jurassic Park Notes Names almost always mean something Nedry
Swap the “d” and “r” and you get Nerdy

7 Jurassic Park Notes Also costumes: Hammond vs. Malcom
Black / “right all the time” v. White/wrong/ “playing god”

8 Jurassic Park Notes What’s missing throughout
the whole tyrannosaur attack? (I always forget to mention this…) Why?
