Unit 2.6, pg 92-99 LO: Know the importance of the Oceans Understand how Ocean ecosystems work and how they are interlinked.

2 The importance of the Oceans:
Ocean Facts: Oceans cover 70% of the Earth’s Surface 97% of the earth’s water is in the oceans The importance of the Oceans: Influence our weather and climate. (eg. El nino) They are an important part of the water cycle (evaporation) They generate O2 and absorb CO2 They provide us with food and resources

3 Life in the Oceans The Food pyramid of the Ocean: Primary producers
Use energy (Sunlight) to convert nutrients into organic compounds (glucose) Nothing else on the food chain produces glucose They are found only in the upper layers As you move up the food pyramid/trophic levels the amount of energy available is lost (through respiration and waste). All the species in the ocean are interdependant.

Read the Pages and make a list of Potential resources from the ocean – add any extra ones that you can think of that are not mentioned in the book Consequences of uncontrolled/unmanaged exploitation of these resources Do the activities 1-3 on page 94
