1 Volcanoes Write on the RIGHT Side

2 Volcano Any place where gas, ash, or melted rock come out of the ground. It can be a tall mountain or a small crack in the ground. Can form at convergent boundaries, divergent boundaries, & hot spots

3 Volcano Magma: Melted rock that is less dense than solid rock
Lava is magma that has reached Earth’s surface Vent: the opening of a volcano

4 At Hot Spots Volcanoes can form far from plate boundaries or within a plate. This is called a Hot Spot.

5 At Convergent Boundaries
Two plates move towards each other, the oceanic plate will sink beneath the continental plate. Some of the oceanic plate will heat up and rise through weak spots on the continental crust forming a volcano.

6 Ring of Fire A name used to describe numerous volcanoes that form on convergent plate boundaries surrounding the Pacific Ocean.

7 At Divergent Boundaries
Two plates move away from each other, magma rises onto the lithosphere onto land or ocean floor
