1 New Public Transport Infrastructure
October 2018

2 National Development Plan 2018 – 2017
Key Public Transport Projects Metrolink DART Expansion BusConnects

3 LUAS & Metro

4

5 MetroLink Project MetroLink

6 MetroLink comprises the previous scheme known as Metro North, running between Swords and St. Stephen’s Green, and what has been referred to as Metro South, extending from St. Stephen’s Green to Sandyford Delivers a full north-south high capacity spine from Swords to Sandyford by 2027

7

8 M50 to Swords 3,000 space park and ride site proposed at north end of the scheme Metro remains in bored tunnel until just south of Swords Route remains on the R132 Swords Bypass but as an elevated metro running above the median

9 City Centre to M50 Section
Optimum route is via Phibsborough with a station at Cross Guns Bridge - integrates better with the DART proposals and provides a very good interchange facility Metro is in bored tunnel all through this area

10 City Centre Section Key Points
Avoids duplicating line of Luas Cross City Doesn’t terminate at St. Stephen’s Green – connects to Green Line at Charlemont Links to DART system at Tara Station Core city centre stations are at St Stephen’s Green East, Tara Street and O’Connell Street Avoids major interference with St. Stephen’s Green

11 Changes from the original Metro North
Connects to the Green Line from day 1 Connects to the DART at Tara Street and Glasnevin providing an integrated rail system Doesn’t duplicate the Luas Cross City line Avoids the major interference with St. Stephen’s Green station under the roadway on St. Stephen’s Green East Removes the complex station previously planned for O’Connell Bridge, which had major construction impacts St. Stephen’s Green East Station. Pink is station box. Hatched area is area for construction but can be reduced on park side. (Tunnel not shown but runs north-south through the pink box.

12 Changes from the original Metro North
Routes through Phibsborough rather than Drumcondra due to the better interchange with the heavy rail system at Glasnevin Stn Severs the Green Line at Charlemont, with southbound Luas services from Broombridge terminating at Charlemont, but with an easy interchange to Metro The line south of Sandyford is likely to operate as a separate Luas line, but the final decision on this will be taken at a later stage

13 Why are we Upgrading the Green Line to Metro?
Existing system will be unable to cater for the future level of passenger demand on this corridor. In future years passenger growth along this line will increase significantly due to: The build-out of Cherrywood - a town of 18,000 population and 12,000 jobs The increase in Sandyford with much larger numbers of jobs and residents Transport modelling indicates that over the next two decades, passenger levels on the Green Line will reach approximately 11,000 passengers in the northbound direction, reaching 13,000 passengers by 2057. The maximum capacity of Luas (all 55 trams) is about 8,000 passengers per hour

15 Public Consultation Public Reaction to MetroLink Justifiable concerns regarding property and land impacts Justifiable concerns relation to construction and operational impacts Some concerns regarding particular station locations and tunnel launch sites Visual impacts in certain areas Upgrade of the Greenline People are generally supportive of MetroLink

16 Issues being considered
Connection to the Green Line Impact of tie-in on Green line Mitigation of impact on property Mitigation of visual impact on Swords Bypass Twin or Single bore tunnel

17 Twin Tunnels or Larger Single Tunnel

18 Next Steps Amend Emerging Preferred Route and carry out second consultation in November Preferred Route to Preliminary Design Stage Develop Statutory documents (Environmental Impact Assessment Report) for Railway Order Application Q4 2019 Develop procurement strategy for construction and operations stages Updates available on
