Barrier: Youth and young adults experiencing homelessness are often less likely to seek shelter than adults, since much of shelter is geared towards adults. This population also interacts with a different range of service providers.
Response:
Expand HMIS coverage or data sharing to youth-specific service providers (e.g. schools).
Outreach teams dedicated to youth and young adults.
Youth-focused marketing campaigns.
Tap knowledge of youth with previous lived experience.

Barrier: Youth and young adults are afraid or unable to share information that is important to housing them or to tracking progress on metrics. Information such as LGTBQ+ status and history of trauma.
Response:
Stop asking but target housing and services toward that population as much as possible.
Partnerships with organizations that serve LGBTQ+ youth.
Authentic engagement with youth with lived experience.

Barrier: Sharing data about homeless youth under the age of 18 is complicated by legal issues around parental consent.

Include RHY providers and other organizations that serve minors in case conferencing.
Create data-sharing agreements that honor legal concerns of providers but allow for collaboration.
