3 The President After losing two races for the Senate, Abraham Lincoln wins the Presidency in 1860 He won 180 out of 183 electoral votes from the FREE STATES - He wasn’t even on most of the ballots in the South!

4 EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION
The boldest step ever taken to free the slaves, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863

5 ASSASSINATION Lincoln was elated as the Civil War came to an end, but not everyone was happy Southern sympathizer and successful actor, John Wilkes Booth was determined to take action against the President

7 TRAGEDY STRIKES When his first plan to kidnap the President failed, his plan turned into an assassination plot Learning of Lincoln’s plan to attend the theater on the night of April 14, 1865, Booth put his plan into action He waited for the exact right moment and shot Lincoln in the back of the head with his single shot .44 caliber Derringer
