1 4.2 – scatter plots & correlations
Textbook pg Objective: The student will create a scatter plot and identify correlations in order to compare to sets of data.

2 Increase in Endangered List
scatter plot: points on a graph that show a possible relationship between two variables 1) The table shows the number of animals ADDED to the endangered species list. Increase in Endangered List YEAR 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 # of species 91 79 62 11 39 10 9 CHECKLIST Title Labels Evenly spaced numbers Points

3 trend line: straight line through graph (not on every point) to show the pattern correlation: describes pattern between 2 data sets *from left to right Positive Negative No correlation trend line goes up trend line goes down no trend line

4 Identifying correlations:
Pos: both increase or decrease None: no relationship Neg: one increase, one decrease 2) Number of empty seats in class and numbers of students seated 3) Number of pets a person owns and number of books a person read last year 4) Monthly rainfall and depth of water reservoir

5 Name Date Period 4.2 – half-sheet (complete on separate graph paper)
