1 Common Core State Standards
A Presentation to the Board of Education October 16, 2012 Common Core State Standards Mark Cerutti, Associate Superintendent, Anne Zeman, Ed.D., Director, Curriculum/Professional Learning Jerrilyn Ewing, Director, Instructional Support Don Azevada, Program Specialist, History/Social Science LaRae Blomquist, Curriculum Specialist, E/LA Mark Freathy, Curriculum Specialist, Math Ray Pietersen, Program Specialist, Science

2 Outcomes: Understand the background and rationale of the CCSS
Understand the shifts and implications for students and teachers in EGUSD for Math English/Language Arts (E/LA) History/Social Science (H/SS) Science Recognize next steps 2

3 Common Core State Standards
Are aligned with college and career expectations; Are clear, understandable and consistent; Include rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills; Clarify the voluntary aspect to avoid the idea of “federal” standards. (1 min.) What top performing countries? Singapore, Finland 3

4 Common Core State Standards
Are informed by other top performing countries, so that all students are prepared to succeed in our global economy and society; Are evidence-based; Were developed by states as a collaborative initiative. Clarify the voluntary aspect to avoid the idea of “federal” standards. (1 min.) What top performing countries? Singapore, Finland 4

5 California’s Common Core State Standards
By agreement, states had to adopt CCSS word for word, but they could add 15%. (CA signifies this with underlining bold text.) CCSS were adopted by the California Board of Education on August 2, 2010. Clarify the voluntary aspect to avoid the idea of “federal” standards.

6 States That Have Adopted the CCSS
August 2, 2010 CA adopted the revised CCSS on Aug. 2, 2010.

7 Common Core Causes SHIFTS in Education
What are the SHIFTS in what we teach?

8 Shifts Demanded by the CCSS: Math
Standards develop foundational knowledge on critical concepts Students become efficient and accurate in developing computational fluency Students develop a deep conceptual understanding of core content and understand why a mathematical idea is important Students apply math concepts in “real world” situations

9 Two Types of Math Standards
Mathematical Practices-describe a set of 8 skills and processes that all students should develop as part of their study of mathematics (Same for K – 12th) Content Standards- the mathematics the students are expected to learn in each grade or course Don’t “publish” this slide in handouts There are two types of standards- at this point go to the administrators snapshot. Mathematical practices are bulleted. This describes a set of skills and processes students should develop. What you will see all the mathematical reasoning standards are not a part of these mathematical practices. You won’t see the reasoning in the content standards, they are more skill oriented now. Content Standards- Students will be able to… 9

10 Standards for Mathematical Practices
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them Reason abstractly and quantitatively Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others Model with mathematics Use appropriate tools strategically Attend to precision Look for and make use of structure Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning Don’t “publish” this slide in handouts You can see we are asking kids to… Scott Ferand is really concerned about the critique of reasoning of others… how are we going to get kids to do this in a respectful manner. This is an important skill to teach our kids. We need to distinguish for kids between critique vs. criticize. 10

11 Alignment to EGUSD Math Plan
Four Areas of Instructional Focus Three Strategies Multiple Representations/ Side-by-Side Instructional model Fractional Thinking (this includes decimals and percents) Number Sense: Students build mathematical intuition and flexibility. Academic Language This is how EGUSD is transitioning to CCSS We are going to do it by… see first rectangle above The three strategies we are going to build from K-12th grade Decomposition Bar Modeling Number line 11 11

12 Shifts Brought by the CCSS: E/LA
Increase reading of informational texts Increased text complexity of reading texts as measured by lexile level Focus on academic vocabulary within context of texts 12

13 Shifts Brought by the CCSS: E/LA
Emphasis on text-dependent questions and performance tasks Connect writing to reading with frequent opportunities to research information Provide literacy instruction in all content areas 13

14 Shifts Demanded by the CCSS: History/Social Science Literacy Skills
Reading Key Ideas and Details Close reading and textual evidence of primary/secondary sources Craft and Structure Text Structure Integration of Knowledge and Ideas Two or more texts on the same topic Range of Reading and Level of Text Complexity Read complex text independently and proficiently Although there is evidence of these skills in H/SS classrooms. The shift in focus of Common Core is mastering these skills as a means to access the content.

15 Shifts Demanded by the CCSS: Science Literacy Skills
Reading Key Ideas and Details Close reading and textual evidence to support analysis of text Craft and Structure Text Structure Integration of Knowledge and Ideas Integrating quantitative textual information with information presented in other visual forms Compare and contrast experimental information with information gained from the text Range of Reading and Level of Text Complexity Read complex text independently and proficiently Although there is evidence of these skills in Science classrooms. The shift in focus of Common Core is mastering these skills as a means to access the content.

16 Shifts Demanded by the CCSS: History/ Social Science and Science Literacy Skills
Writing Text Types and Purposes Write arguments using discipline specific evidence and claims Production and Distribution of Writing Using technology to produce, publish and collaborate Research to Build and Present Knowledge Conduct short or sustained research projects Range of Writing Write routinely and for a range of tasks Although there is evidence of these skills in H/SS and Science classrooms. The shift in focus of Common Core is mastering these writing skills as a means to show college and career readiness through and understanding of the content.

20 CCSS Transition Timeline: 2014-15
Testing begins in Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium Testing for grades 3-8, and 11 Includes summative and optional interim assessments Discuss “backwards mapping” using the testing timeline to inform the plan. Smarter Balanced testing by grade levels is based on most up to date information.

21 What Is EGUSD Doing to Support the Transition?

22 Communication was the first step.
Communication was the first step.

23 How Does CCSS Affect EGUSD’s Teachers?
Learning Curve for Teachers Awareness Understanding the new Standards Implementation Training New Thinking, New Planning

24 CCSS Support for Teachers

25 How Does CCSS Affect EGUSD’s Parents?
Parents need support: Understanding why we have new standards Understanding how they can support their students Resources Provided to Date: Back-to-School PowerPoint Parent Tab on CCSS blog CCSS Math Nights Being Designed

26 How Does CCSS Affect EGUSD’s Digital Education Initiative?
CCSS affects assessment and instruction. Assessments are internet-dependent Students will take the assessments online. The web-based nature will allow the questions to Be varied from student-to-student Be changed in terms of level of difficulty to match students’ performance level based upon correct (or incorrect) responses. Results will be provided with a much quicker turn- around time than currently experienced.

27 How Does CCSS Affect EGUSD’s Digital Education Initiative?
The internet will be used for instruction. Example: Reading standard #7 requires 8th graders to “evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of using different mediums such as print, digital text, video, or multi-media, to present a particular topic or idea.”
