A thematic statement is a sentence that describes how the author’s vision about the human condition is revealed. In other words, what the author has to say about the subject represented by the abstract noun. Criteria: SHOULD BE A DECLARATIVE STATEMENT. SHOULD BE UNIVERSAL. SHOULD NOT BE BOUND BY TIME PERIOD, GENRE, CULTURE, ETC. SHOULD REVEAL TRUTHS ABOUT HUMAN NATURE.

16 Let’s Discuss! 5 minutes Thematic Statements
Create a thematic statement with your SHOULDER partner and write it in your box. Identify 1 piece of evidence from the Prologue that supports your statement.

17 Let’s Discuss! 2 minutes Group Sharing
Share statements with your table. Determine the stronger thematic statement. Write this on the white board along with the evidence that supports it. Be prepared to share.

Share statements and evidence with the class. Evaluate peers’ statements and provide meaningful feedback. Jot down notes while classmates are presenting their thematic statements.
