1 Instructor: Mike O’Dell
Superior Designs, Inc. Spring 2011 Approved Projects (for delivery August 2011) Instructor: Mike O’Dell

2 Autonomous Telescope Aiming Device
Develop a system that uses astronomical information to aim a telescope at a selected object in the sky Develop the ability to transform stored information into aiming directions for a telescope mounted on an autonomous pointing device. Requires a blend of computational capability with robotic controls Sponsor: Dr. Bob Weems

3 Autonomous Othello/Checkers
Develop a system that uses AI and robotics to play the board games Othello and Checkers. Player faces off against computer at various difficulty levels. Computer places chips using robotic assist. Uses image analysis to establish board status and then employs AI to determine best move by computer. Sponsor: TBD (prior SD student recommendation)

4 Automated Slot Car Racing System
Develop a system that applies wireless signals to control a slot car on a slot car track An overhead camera or some other tracking mechanism could be used to get the position of cars on the track A computer would regulate power to a car that would race a human player Sponsor: TBD (recommendation by Chris McMurrough)

5 Automated Window Blind Controller
Develop a system that will separately control (open/close/raise/lower) at least two sets of window blinds. Implement options to: 1) power each with an external solar panel and 2) incorporate external/ambient light (sunlight) into when the blinds open or close.  Requires integration and incorporation of networking, light sensors, motor controllers, etc. Sponsor: TBD (Senior Design GTA recommendation)

6 Smart Fitness Trainer Sponsor: TBD (prior SD student recommendation)
Develop a system for Xbox 360, Wii or similar gaming device that simulates a personal fitness trainer Uses image analysis/sensors to detect player’s position and movements and provides instructions/commands. Monitors activity level, heart rate, etc and gives real-time feedback. Sponsor: TBD (prior SD student recommendation)

7 Voice-Operated Tread Mill
Design and develop a system that controls a treadmill based on voice commands. Interface voice control device with “standard” treadmill mechanical controls (e.g. speed and incline) Include safety override commands Sponsor: Marcus Oladell (or possibly a sports equipment manufacturer)

8 Directional Sound Receiver
Design and develop a system consisting of an array of omni-directional microphones. Adjust delays in the audio streams from microphones to reinforce sound/suppress noise. Develop user interface to monitor and control speaker selection. Potential application: speaker selection in a conference room/meeting Sponsor: Umair Sadiq/UTA Lab??
