1 Seafloor Siphon or What’s Going on in the Basement?!
How do we use technology to study the seafloor?

2 How to study the seafloor?
Introductory Video Clip

3 Suggest ways that scientists can study the deep-sea floor
Lead students in a discussion? What do they know about exploring the deep-sea floor?

4 R/V Atlantis – Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI)
The Atlantis is the research vessel from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). While operated by WHOI, the U.S. Navy owns the Atlantis. The ship was specially designed to transport deep submergence vehicles such as the Alvin. While the Alvin was being overhauled, Atlantis transported remotely operated vehicles, such as ROV Jason.

5 Remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Jason
Jason is one of the remotely operated vehicles designed and built by the Deep Submergence Laboratory at WHOI. An ROV operates tethered to a ship and is commonly used for deep-sea explorations.

6 Autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) Sentry
Sentry is an underwater autonomous vehicle also operated by WHOI. It is fully autonomous and can be outfitted with a variety of sensors to complement individual research objectives. It is more versatile than an ROV because it can be programmed to travel further from a ship as it does not require a wired tether. Often an AUV is deployed along with an ROV.

7 Elevator (AVT)
