1 (Use your traveling nitrogen activity to help)
Science Tip 11/16/10 (Use your traveling nitrogen activity to help) Describe your path as a Nitrogen. Why does Nitrogen change form? Were there any places your Nitrogen didn’t go to? Is that O.K.? I will collect your Traveling Nitrogen labs from you when we are all done.

2 (Use your C,C,R lab to help)
Science Tip 11/17/10 (Use your C,C,R lab to help) Where do we get ALL of our “radiation” from here on Earth? How? Explain Conduction and Convection (here on earth). Why are cloudy days cooler…but cloudy nights are warmer?

3 Solar Energy

4 ENERGY FROM THE SUN Radiation- the transfer of energy through matter or space by electromagnetic waves. Conduction- the transfer of heat that occurs when molecules collide. Convection- the transfer of heat by the flow of a heated material; occurs in gases or liquids.

6 R,C,C Review

7 How does R,C,C impact Earth

9 ATMOSPHERE Fate of Radiation
20% of the rays are absorbed in the atmosphere. 30% of these rays are reflected off of the clouds and back into space. 50% of these rays reach the earth’s surface.

10 ATMOSPHERE Dark-colored objects absorb a lot of the sun’s infrared radiation, become warm quickly, and are said to have a low albedo. Light-colored objects that absorb less radiation (reflect more radiation) tend not to get as warm and are said to have a high albedo.

11 ATMOSPHERE Due to conduction, the air above warm ground becomes warm. This warm air rises, expands and cools which causes this air to sink. This circular motion is called convection. Uneven heating of the surface of the earth creates convective cells. The equator gets more infrared radiation than the poles.

12 So…is Earth’s Atmosphere heated TOP DOWN or BOTTOM UP??

13 What does this R,C,C do? Responsible for ALL Weather on Earth!!

14 WEATHER!!!!!!!!!!

15 Greenhouse Gas List these gasses in your objective notes:

16 Greenhouse Gas How does it work?

17 Greenhouse Gas Where do the EXTRA gasses come from? What gas is it?

18 Greenhouse Gas

19 That’s It…All Done! Work on your Intro to Atmosphere Review
