1 The Reproductive System

2 Reproduction Reproduction – is the process by which new organisms are produced Gametes – male and female reproductive cells Males Gametes – sperm Female Gametes – ova (or eggs)

3 Fertilization Fertilization – the reproductive process that happens when a sperm joins with an egg.

4 Fertilization Zygote – a cell that forms when a sperm cell fertilizes an egg cell First cell of a new human Contains genetic information

5 Male Reproductive System
Sperm are produced in the testes Are then stored in tubes called sperm ducts Sperm will mature in the sperm ducts

6 Male Reproductive System
The testes also produce a hormone called testosterone. Once the sperm have fully developed, they can travel to the penis.

7 Male Reproductive System
The penis is going to deliver the sperm to the female reproductive system Sperm are transported in a fluid called semen.

8 Female Reproductive System
The female reproductive system contains two ovaries Eggs will grow and mature in the ovaries Hormones: Estrogen and Progesterone helps eggs mature

9 Female Reproductive System
Once mature, eggs are released from the ovaries and enter the fallopian tubes. Fallopian tubes connect the ovaries to the uterus.

10 Female Reproductive System
Fertilization will occur if sperm is present in the fallopian tube and the egg is released in the fallopian tube. Once fertilized the zygote will move through the fallopian tubes and attach inside the uterus

11 Female Reproductive System
If there are no sperm in the fallopian tube, the egg will not be fertilized. Unfertilized eggs break down in the uterus and leave the body during the menstrual cycle.

12 The Menstrual Cycle The endocrine system controls egg maturation and release and thickening of the lining of the uterus in a process called the menstrual cycle. The menstrual cycle takes about 28 days

13 The Menstrual Cycle Three Parts:
1. eggs grow and mature and the thickened lining of the uterus leaves the body. 2. mature eggs are released from the ovaries and the lining of the uterus thickens 3.Unfertilized eggs and the thickened lining break down

14 Human Development Zygote – sperm fertilizes an egg
Embryo - ball shaped structure that attaches inside the uterus Fetus – last stage before birth

15 The Endocrine System

16 Endocrine System Responsible for releasing hormones into our bodies.
The endocrine system uses hormones to communicate with other organ systems.

17 Endocrine System Hormones are chemical signals sent from the organs of the endocrine system. Hormones take longer to send a signal than nerves do, but the effect lasts longer. The endocrine system works with other body systems to maintain homeostasis.
