1
Monohybrid Genetics Gregor Mendel
Cut along the dotted lines then fold Plants which differ in only one trait Monohybrid Genetics The study of heredity Gregor Mendel The father of genetics
2
Law of Independent Assortment
Cut along the dotted lines then fold Law of Segregation States that genes separate from each other in meiosis during the formation of gametes Portions of DNA molecules that contain the genetic information for making particular proteins Genes Law of Independent Assortment States that genes for different expressions (visible traits) are passed independently of each other from parent to offspring
3
Punnett Square Phenotype Genotype
Cut along the dotted lines then fold Diagram used to predict the outcome of a particular breeding and the probability of the offspring having a specific genotype Punnett Square Term given to actual appearance; which trait was actually expressed. Phenotype Term given to the actual molecular genes on the chromosomes, which genes are present on chromosomes Genotype
4
Dominant Recessive Homozygous
Cut along the dotted lines then fold A gene that is expressed phenotypically regardless of the genotypic make-up. In other words, if the gene is present the trait will be seen. Dominant Allele that causes a phenotype (visible or detectable characteristic) that is only seen in a homozygous genotype (an organism that has two copies of the same allele) and never in a heterozygous genotype Recessive Homozygous Having identical alleles for a single trait
5
Cut along the dotted lines then fold
When genes are different, offspring has one dominant and one recessive gene; phenotypically, the offspring will express (show) the dominant gene Heterozygous A mixture of genetic material (Ex: red flowers crossed with white flowers make pink flowers) Incomplete Dominance One member of a pair or series of genes that occupy a specific position on a specific chromosome. Allele
