1 Does a purple ice cube melt faster than a yellow ice cube?
Question Does a purple ice cube melt faster than a yellow ice cube?

2 The purple ice cube will melt before the yellow ice cube does.
Hypothesis The purple ice cube will melt before the yellow ice cube does.

3 Materials 2 ice cube trays Blue, red, and yellow food coloring
2 tongue depressors or stirring sticks 2 clear containers Water Freezer

4 Procedure 1. Fill the ice cube trays with water.
2. Use the food dye to color the water in one tray purple and the other tray yellow. Freeze the ice cube trays. Put an frozen purple ice cube in one clear container and a frozen yellow ice cube in another clear container. Set the containers in a window. Observe and record which ice cube turns completely to liquid first.

5 Data (Which Color Melted First?)
Group 1 Group 2 Group 3 Group 4 Group 5 Group 6 Group 7 X

6 Results In 2 out of 7 groups the purple ice cube melted first.
In 5 out of 7 groups the yellow ice cube melted first.

7 Conclusion Our hypothesis was incorrect because more yellow ice cubes melted before the purple ice cubes. We thought the darker color would melt first because we read that dark colors absorb more heat than light colors. We also know that when we sit on a dark colored car seat in the summer it is really hot! Since not all of the yellow cubes melted first. We need to do more research and design another experiment to see if we were truly right or wrong. In our next experiment we might want to include thermometers.
