1 The Study of the microscopic structures of tissues
Histology The Study of the microscopic structures of tissues

2 Histological Grouping of Tissue
1. Epithelial Tissue 2. Connective Tissue 3. Muscle 4. Nervous Tissue

3 Epithelial Tissue Tissue that covers a body surface or lines a body cavity. Is named based on two criteria: 1. Cell shape 2. Cell layers Functions in: protection, absorption, filtration, excretion/secretion and as a sensory receptor

4 Cell Layers 1. Simple: one cell layer
2. Stratified: two or more cell layers 3. Pseudostratified: one cell layer but looks as if it has several layer .

5 Cell Shape 2. Columnar: column shaped cells
1. Cuboidal : cubed shaped cells 2. Columnar: column shaped cells 3. Stratified: flat scale shaped cells

6 Epithelial Slides Covered
On ALL SLIDES BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY THE TYPE OF TISSUE AND KNOW: CELL MEMBRANE, CYTOPLASM NUCLEUS Slides covered 1. Simple squamous epithelium 2. Simple cuboidal epithelium 3. Simple columnar epithelium 4. Pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium Know: cilia, goblet cells 5. Stratified squamous epithelium

7 Simple Squamous Epithelium

8 Simple cuboidal epithelium

9 Simple columnar epithelium

10 Pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium

11 Stratified squamous epithelium

12 Connective Tissue The most abundant and widely distributed tissue
Functions in: binding and support, protection, insulation and transportation Characterized by having few cells scattered about a nonliving matrix.

13 Adipose Tissue Know Nucleus lipids

14 Aereolar Connective Tissue
Know: Fiberblast Collagenous fibers Elastic fibers

15 Blood

16 Bone

17 Hyaline Cartilage Know: Lacunae Rubbery matrix chondrocytes

18 Elastic Cartilage Know Lacunae Elastic fibery matrix chondrocyte

19 Reticular Connective Tissue
Know: Reticular cells Reticular fibers

20 Divided into 3 categories: Smooth Cardiac
Muscles Divided into 3 categories: Smooth Cardiac

21 Skeletal muscle cross section

22 Skeletal muscle longinal section

23 Smooth Muscle

24 Cardiac Muscle

25 The functional unit of nervous tissue is the neuron More later
