If you have the habit of asking a book questions as you read, you are a better reader than if you do not.
But merely asking questions is not enough. You have to try to answer them.
It is easier to remember and answer these questions with a pen or pencil in your hand.

First, it keeps you conscious
Second, Writing down comments makes you think about what you’re reading, that’s a good thing.
Third, writing your reactions down helps you to remember your interpretation of specific passages.

Fifth, it helps you mark specific passages you don’t understand so you can remember to ask your teacher about them – you don’t have to remember where they are.

Keep track of how and why characters change
Use this when you learn new things about them

If you’re not sure which category to use pick one and go with it.
Don‘t be afraid to read the passage more then once when annotating
Don’t ever erase a question when you get an answer!
Always explain ‘why’ when you give an opinion
