1 Annotating Texts Mr. Laurich

2 Task 1: Annotating Text RI Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. RI Determine a central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text.

3 Bell Work Why do you think Legacy High School makes such a big deal over annotating text? Be sure to write the question down and answer it using complete sentences When you see the pencil on a slide take notes!

4 Task 1: Annotating Text If you have the habit of asking a book questions as you read, you are a better reader than if you do not. But merely asking questions is not enough. You have to try to answer them. It is easier to remember and answer these questions with a pen or pencil in your hand.

5 Task 1: Annotating Text Why is it important to mark a book as you read it? First, it keeps you conscious Second, Writing down comments makes you think about what you’re reading, that’s a good thing. Third, writing your reactions down helps you to remember your interpretation of specific passages.

6 Task 1: Annotating Text Why is it important to mark a book as you read it? Fourth, it makes the text easier to understand. Fifth, it helps you mark specific passages you don’t understand so you can remember to ask your teacher about them – you don’t have to remember where they are.

7 What should I mark down? You need to both highlight and comment!
Comment first then highlight Use symbols with your comments.

Write down genuine questions you have Try to start questions with ‘Why’ whenever possible

Look specifically for elements in the text that connect in a meaningful way to your own life, to your world, to a film, song or TV show you've seen.

If you think you know what’s going to happen later write it down  Keep track of your predictions

Write down your reaction and what prompted it. (good or bad)

Think deeply about the passage's larger meaning.  What message or idea is this passage trying to communicate?

Definitely judge these characters. Are they acting stupidly or wisely? Morally or immorally?  Legally or illegally?

Keep track of how and why characters change Use this when you learn new things about them

16 Helpful Hints If you’re not sure which category to use pick one and go with it. Don‘t be afraid to read the passage more then once when annotating Don’t ever erase a question when you get an answer! Always explain ‘why’ when you give an opinion
