1 Document Types Technical Writing Document Types

2 A type of technical or transactional document
SUMMARY A type of technical or transactional document Provide information Persuade readers Leaflets Announcements Bulletins A summary is one type of technical or transactional document you might need to create. Like other transactional documents, a summary will provide information and persuade readers. The summary can be put into a variety of formats, such as announcements, news releases, bulletins, brochures, leaflets, and flyers. Brochures News Releases Flyers

3 Make sure your words convey the message adequately
Announcements, News Releases & Bulletins Used for communicating with an audience outside the organization New version of a software package Make sure your words convey the message adequately Announcements, news releases, and bulletins are used for communicating with an audience outside an organization. The information in any of these is usually something of interest to the public. For example, you might see a news release about a new version of a software package that will soon be available in stores. These types of summaries may be read or read aloud on the radio or on TV. They generally do not include graphic elements such as images or color, so if you’re writing one of these, you have to make sure your words convey the message adequately.

4 Announcements, News Releases & Bulletins
Usually written in paragraph format This type of summary will be read aloud Make sure it can be read easily: Double spaced 12-point Times New Roman Announcements, news releases, and bulletins are usually written in paragraph format. In print, they resemble memos. If this type of summary is being written so it can be read aloud, you don't need to worry too much about formatting. You do, however, have to make sure it can be read easily. Use a clear, large font (such as double-spaced 12-point Times New Roman), and make sure the printed copy isn't smudged or faded. 5 This type of summary must be visually appealing
Brochures, Leaflets & Flyers Are meant to be looked at This type of summary must be visually appealing Bi-fold or Tri-fold Two-sided Unlike the other documents, brochures, leaflets, and flyers are meant to be looked at (sometimes repeatedly) rather than read aloud. Therefore, you would want a summary in these formats to be visually appealing. These documents might be put into a single page, a bi- or a tri-fold, or a two-sided document. Color, images, and layout should be used to enhance the text. If you’re not a good graphic designer, work with someone who is. If you’re not a good graphic designer, work with someone who is Single Page

6 SUMMARY Think about the info and your target audience
Did I include everything I want? Think about the info and your target audience Brochure Choose the appropriate format News Release When writing a summary, think about the information you need to convey, your target audience, and then choose the appropriate format. One way to know whether you've chosen the best format is to consider whether you can include everything you want in that format. If you need to include graphics, then a brochure is probably a better choice than an announcement. If you want to reach as many people as possible, a news release will probably get the message out more effectively than a flyer.
