1 Nervous System Ms. Doshi

2 Sensory Division: The Eye
Functions: Detects (를 검출 Verb: 발견하다 , 검파하다) light energy (as photons). Transmits intensity (강도 Noun: 강렬), color, and stimuli to the brain.

3 The Eye: Structure

5 Parts of the Eye sclera The white of the eye. choroid
Dark, pigmented inner layer Absorbs extraneous light to reduce reflection (반사를 감소시키기 외광 을 흡수) within the eye cornea Bends and focuses light rays Transparent pupil Light rays travel through this. Its diameter is controlled by the iris. iris Pigmented and muscular Responds to the intensity (강도 Noun: 강렬) of light in the surroundings

6 Parts of the Eye aqueous humor Between the cornea and the iris lens
part of focus system behind the pupil ciliary muscles Control the shape of the lens. vitreous humor jelly-like Maintains shape of the eye and its optical properties (광학 특성) retina The screen at the back of the eye onto which the image falls. (이미지가 속하는 상눈 뒤쪽의스크린 . blind spot Where the optic nerve exits the retina. No rods or cones fovea high visual acuity (높은 시력) Has thin and closely packed cones

7 How do we see? I The lens focuses the image on the retina.
At the retina, the light is transduced (convert one type of energy into another) into action potentials. Rods and cones are responsible for transduction. They are on the surface of the retina. Cones respond to high intensity illumination (고휘도 조명) and 'see' color. Rods respond to low intensity illumination (저 강도 조명) and 'see' black and white. They are important for night vision.

8 How do we see? II The visual pigments (red, green, and blue in cones; rhodopsin in rods) absorb (흡수) specific wavelengths of light that produce action potentials. The rods and cones are synapsed to bipolar cells. The bipolar cells are synapsed to ganglion cells (sensory neurons). Axons of the ganglion cells group together to form the right and left optic nerves. These optic nerves conduct visual stimuli to the brain.
