1 warm up 11 4/29 Myelin sheath axon neuron Dendrite cell body synapse neurotransmitter The cells that transmit impulses in the nervous system are called 1.____________. Impulses are received through the 2.____________. The largest part of the neuron is the 3.___________. Impulses are then carried away from the cell body through the 4._________. This is surrounded by an insulated member called 5._______________. The location which a neuron transfers an impulse to another cell is called the 6._________. The impulses are sent through the synapse as chemicals called 7.________.

2 The Cardiovascular System (Circulatory System)

3 What parts does it consist of?
Heart Blood vessels Blood

4 Functions: Carries needed substances (oxygen, nutrients, waste) to cells, carries waste products away from cells, fights disease

5 Blood carries substances that need to get from one part of the body to another
Examples: Blood carries oxygen from your lungs to your other body cells Blood transports the glucose your cells use to produce energy

6 Blood picks up waste products from cells
Example: When cells break down glucose, they produce carbon dioxide (waste product). The carbon dioxide passes from cells into the blood where it is taken to the lungs to be exhaled

7 Blood contains cells that fight disease.
White blood cells are the body’s disease fighter Recognize disease-causing organisms (bacteria). Alert body of invasion Surround and kill the organism

8 Some WBCs called phagocytes eat up antigens (bacteria, viruses & fungi).
Pus is formed when these WBC battle antigens!

9 Pacemaker: sends out signals to contract heart
The heart has 2 sides (right/left) 4 chambers Upper chamber: atrium (receives blood) Lower chamber: ventricle (pumps out blood) Valves- prevents backflow Pacemaker: sends out signals to contract heart

10 works Systemic circulation Pulmonary circulation

12 What happens after occurs in the Blood vessels
Arteries- carries blood Away from the heart Capillaries- tiny narrow vessels where substances are exchanged between blood and body cells Veins- carries blood back to the heart

13 1st loop- blood travels from the heart to lungs & back to heart 2nd loop- travels from the heart to the body and back to the heart

14 Blood Pressure As blood travels through blood vessels, the blood exerts a force against the walls of the blood vessels, similar to water moving through a hose

15 Diseases of the circulatory system
Atherosclerosis- fatty deposits called plaque build up on the inner walls of the arteries Leading cause of death in US 1/3 deaths

16

17 How to recognize a stroke
Ask the individual to smile Ask them to raise both arms Ask them to speak a simple sentence
