How did the Nazis control the Youth?

Life in Nazi Germany Youth

Learning Objectives All must be able to identify 3 ways the Nazis sought to control youth in Germany (Levels 3/4) Many should be able to identify why a political party might seek to control the youth of a country (Levels 5/6) Some could start to analyse the possible consequences of this kind of control mechanism and recognise how it could impact World War 2 (Level 7)

Key Terms Indoctrination
teaching someone to accept a set of beliefs without questioning them.  Hitler Jugend (Hitler Youth) -A youth group that included after-school meetings, camping trips, and other activities -founded in 1926, the original purpose was to train boys to enter the SA (Storm Troopers) -In 1936, membership in Nazi youth groups became mandatory for all boys and girls between the ages of ten and seventeen.  Wehrmacht   -the armed forces especially of Germany from 1935 to 1945

Adolf Hitler (1938) “These boys and girls enter our organizations [at] ten years of age, and often for the first time get a little fresh air; after four years of the Young Folk they go on to the Hitler Youth, where we have them for another four years And even if they are still not complete National Socialists, they go to Labour Service and are smoothed out there for another six, seven months And whatever class consciousness or social status might still be left the Wehrmacht [German armed forces] will take care of that.”

Textbook Prayers Poster Description of the source. What message is trying to be conveyed through this source? (what is the story? Bias?) How effective would this source be in indoctrinating a child?

Page from The Poisonous Mushroom
Page from The Poisonous Mushroom. This photograph shows a page from one of several antisemitic children's books published by Julius Streicher's Der Stürmer-Verlag. The text reads, "The Jewish nose is crooked at its tip. It looks like the number 6."

Hitler Youth 'Prayers'  "Adolf Hitler, you are our great Führer. Thy name makes the enemy tremble. Thy Third Reich comes, thy will alone is law upon the earth. Let us hear daily thy voice and order us by thy leadership, for we will obey to the end and even with our lives. We praise thee! Hail Hitler!" "Führer, my Führer, give me by God. Protect and preserve my life for long. You saved Germany in time of need. I thank you for my daily bread. Be with me for a long time, do not leave me, Führer, my Führer, my faith, my light, Hail to my Führer!"

“Officer of tomorrow”
