1 How do packaging engineers use what they know about the properties of the product and the needs of the consumer to design packages? Do you remember some of the functions of packages that you learned about in A Gift from Fadil? What part of this is the package? What part is the product? Who do you think are the consumers of this bottled water? Why do you think that? Did the bottle give you any hints? Do you think this package is a good match for the product? Why? Do you think this package is a good match for the consumer? Why?

2 The qualities or characteristics of the package you just identified as making the bottle a good match for the product and consumer are some of the properties of the package. Properties are characteristics of a material or an object, such as how it looks, feels, or behaves. There are many properties of the water bottle that make it a good match for the water it contains and the for the consumers who will buy the package.

3 What are some properties of the package?
What are some properties of the product? Do you think the package is a good match for the product? Why or why not? Who is the consumer of this product? Why do you think so? Do you think this package is a good match for the consumer? Why or why not?

4 What are some properties of the package?
What are some properties of the product? Do you think the package is a good match for the product? Why or why not? Who is the consumer of this product? Why do you think so? Do you think this package is a good match for the consumer? Why or why not?

5 Reflection What functions of a package are the most common? What functions are the least common? Why do you think many packages have more than one function? How might our list of package functions be useful to a packaging engineer? How do packaging engineers use what they know about the properties of the product and the needs of the consumer to design packages? If a friend asked you to tell him or her about what packaging engineers do, what would you say? Were you surprised by any of the analyses of products and packages we did today? Why?

6 How might you improve the package that your group analyzed?
Do any of you think that your product was over packaged? Why? What types of problems could over packaging cause? REDESIGN A PACKAGE Directions: Think about the package below. How could you improve it? Draw or write your ideas.
