Both Emperors of the Sui are known for harsh rule Yangdi, son of Wendi, took control of China Expanded China’s territory Rebuilt the Great Wall Built the Grand Canal High taxes Revolts occurred due to angry farmers/taxes

11 Public Works Program Yangdi launched a public works program forcing Chinese people to improve roads, canals, and many other public works projects. 3 million people who worked on the canal died from hard labor & starvation. Chinese people felt the canal was a waste of money & human lives

12 Fall of the Sui Dynasty High taxes and poor working conditions made people angry. A revolt to bring down the Sui Dynasty was brought about by farmers The rebel army took control and killed Yangdi The Sui Dynasty ended in 618
