GET SOMETHING DONE What is wrong with this child? Who cut his hair, a hairdresser or himself? Sometimes we need someone to do things for us. NİŞANTAŞI ÜNİVERSİTESİ ©

causatıves We use a causative verb when we want to talk about something that someone else does for us or for another person. It means that the subject caused the action to happen, but didn't do it themselves. Maybe they paid, or asked, or persuaded the other person to do it. There are two basic causative structures. One is like an active, and the other is like a passive. NİŞANTAŞI ÜNİVERSİTESİ ©

4 Passıve Causatıve Structure:
I cut my hair, it seems terrible. I must go to the hairdresser to get my hair cut tomorrow. We’re getting our house painted this weekend. Bob got his teeth whitened; his smile looks great! My washing machine is broken; I need to get it repaired. Look at the sentences above and complete the rule. ________ + object + __________ (have something _______) NİŞANTAŞI ÜNİVERSİTESİ ©

5 Active Causative Structure:
How can we get all the employees to arrive on time? My husband hates housework; I can never get him to wash the dishes! I was nervous about eating sushi, but my brother got me to try it at a Japanese restaurant. The association got a professional photographer to take photos at the event for free. Read the first sentence and circle the correct word. Who will arrive on time, employees / us? Who will force the others arrive on time, employees / us? Look at the sentences above and complete the rule. Get + someone + _________ + _________+ object *The differences between “have” and “get” something done: “have” is slightly more formal than “get”, and that “get” is more frequent than “have” in the imperative form.  NİŞANTAŞI ÜNİVERSİTESİ ©

HAVE SOMETHING DONE Passive Causative Structure: Match the sentences on the left with the explanations on the right. I cleaned my house. I had my house cleaned. A cleaner cleaned my house. I myself cleaned my house. In a sense, using a causative verb is similar to using a passive. The important thing is that the house is now clean. We don't focus on who did the cleaning.
