Board update Dementia Action Alliance Simon Kitchen, Head of Secretariat, 19th June 2013

2 Purpose of the Board Guide the work of the Alliance
Maintain the independence of Alliance Oversee the development of Alliance priorities Ensure the Alliance is on a secure financial footing Rotate the chairing of Alliance events Set membership criteria Approve (with Alliance staff) areas of joint work conducted under the name of the Alliance Agree work plan of staff and monitor performance The National Dementia Declaration was developed by people with dementia and their families with support from major charities such as the Alzheimer’s Society and Age UK and professional bodies such as ADASS and the Royal Colleges Led by people the people it aims to transform the lives of, ambitious, comprehensive and achievable Closely aligned to the National Dementia Strategy and provide a common rallying cry and goal that all organisations can work towards

4 Board decisions Board composition:
Heather Gilling from Dementia Support South Lincolnshire and Chair of South Lincolnshire Dementia Action Alliance will be invited to attend the next Board Local Board members should speak on behalf of all local alliances, rather than just their own local alliance. Requested recommendations from all Alliance members for a suitable clinical representative to sit on the Board.

5 Board decisions Board composition:
Financial expert should be co-op’ed to sit on the Board to provide financial advice and guidance to the Alliance. The existing sectors represented by the co-chairs (private, public and not-for-profit) would continue to be represented on the DAA Board until wider agreement from members. Existing co-Chairs will remain in place until the Annual Event.

6 Board decisions Membership criteria Joint working
The Board agreed that the core membership requirement for the DAA is committing to and fulfilling actions. All members must therefore complete an action plan and provide regular updates. Joint working Board / Alliance staff have to approve any joint work conducted under the branding of the Dementia Action Alliance

7 Board decisions Finance
The Board agreed that the Alliance surplus should not be spent and be used instead to build up a reserve of at least 1/3 of annual running costs.

8 Next Board meeting on 6th August
Topics to discuss will include how the Alliance engages with BAME communities Simon Kitchen Dementia Action Alliance
