3 The Research Process Steps to gathering information
Step 1: Using the Textbook for research Step 2: Using safe search engines to find websites. Step 3: Taking notes using guiding questions.

4 What is Research??? Research can be defined as the act of using differing sources (Search engines, websites and books) in order to find information about a topic. Research is a journey and process that takes time, practice and patience.

5 What is Note-Taking??? Note-Taking is a guided practice in which the student takes notes in numbers or bullet points using a whole class driving question and guiding questions provided by the teacher. Notes are meant to provide the who? What? When? Where? Why and how? background for your topic. Note-taking is meant to provide you with the information that you will use in your body paragraphs of the research paper.

6 What is Fact Finding??? Fact finding is an unguided process in which the student writes down random facts about a topic without any care or understanding of what he or she is writing down.

8 Research Step # 1 Using the textbook
Everyone will have to use the textbook when conducting research. The textbook is a reliable source for information on nearly every topic. The best way to use the textbook is to use the INDEX. The index is a section at the back of the book, where you can search up your topic alphabetically. The index provides you with the page # You can also use the page numbers provided on the right side of your GUIDING QUESTIONS ATTACHMENT.

9 Research Step # 2 Using Safe Search Engines
What is a search engine??? A search engine is the online platform that allows you to search for information and websites. A search engine IS NOT a WEBSITE. Examples of search engines include, Google and Yahoo. Google and Yahoo are not safe search engines, meaning information may be false or inappropriate for people. Why use safe-search engines: Good because of quality sources, Images next to search results List of sources under images are all scholarly= Good to cite in essay.

10 Research Step # 2 Using Search Engines
Safe search engines for you to use: Type in your topic just like in Google.

11 How to evaluate websites as good or bad……
Watch the video to discover how to evaluate websites as good or bad. Guided practice/worksheet questions: What is the search engine you used to find the website? What is the website you will evaluate? Who is the author of the website? (List the name of person, organization or website title). Is the author credible and qualified to make the website? Why or why not? Why did the author or organization create the website and everything on it? Does the motivation for creating the website hurt or help the credibility of the author and site? Is the source a .com, .org or .gov? Does the website have sources? If so what are they?

12 Research Step 3: Taking notes using guiding questions
Read over the note-taking rubric for how you will be graded on your notes. Have your notes packet out Write down the # of the guiding question. Restate and answer the questions using the resources listed on the guided questions packet and on the next slide.

15 Student Checklist Before I turn in my notes….
Did I take preliminary notes on all of my assigned topics? Are the notes neat and organized into numbers? Did I restate and answer each guiding question?

16 When you are done with your notes
Place them the white bin on my desk Download Part 2: Creating the Essential Question (Exit ProJet Central tab) Read the essential question attachment Begin brainstorming possible essential questions based upon your research.
