Information Seeking – what information are you going to look for?  Pre-focus Exploration – gather background info.  Focus Formulation – now that you know kind of where you want to go, narrow your search.  A list of key words and phrases, with definitions, that could be used in searching for information

Ask yourself these questions:  Can the topic be limited to an event or place?  Can the topic be limited to a short period of time?  Can the topic be limited to one person, one group, or one example?  Can the topic be limited to one aspect of the general topic?

10  Good research questions are NOT ones that can be answered with a “yes” or “no” or a date.  Sometimes they can begin with words like: who, what, how, or why.  Compelling questions may involve words like: describe, compare, contrast, or what were the causes of _______________? Or what were the results of _______________?  The basis of your research will be the answers to these compelling questions.  Remember, your questions may change as you read and learn more about your topic.  Be prepared to revise or add or omit questions as you go along.
