1 Take out notebook, folder, pencil box and agenda..
Walk-in Take out notebook, folder, pencil box and agenda.. Copy this week’s agenda.

2 Take out notebook, folder, pencil box.
Walk-in Take out notebook, folder, pencil box. Answer at the back in sentences: State each organ that air goes through in the respiratory system, from the beginning to when it transfers oxygen to cells.

3 Nose and mouth/nasal cavity – warm and clean the incoming air
Respiratory organs Nose and mouth/nasal cavity – warm and clean the incoming air Trachea – tube that connects nose and mouth to lungs Bronchi – two tubes that branch from trachea into each lung Lung – contains bronchial tubes

4 Bronchial tubes – the bronchi branch into smaller and smaller tubes
Alveoli – tiny balloons that put oxygen into the blood, and remove carbon dioxide to exhale Diaphragm – dome-shaped muscle that controls breathing

5 How Much Air Can You Exhale?

6 Experiment Question: How much air can you exhale?
Observe how much 4 liters is – almost a whole gallon jug! HYPOTHESIS: If I exhale, then I predict I can blow ______ liters.

7 Make a giant blow-out! Your group will use a liter ruler to measure
and mark a giant plastic tube, like a party blowout! Then attach a plastic ring with tape to the blowout. Each person should put their own rolled up cardboard mouthpiece into the plastic tube. Blow as much air out as you can! Watch to see how far the giant tube fills with air. Measure it and record it in the chart.

8 Video of procedure Watch this homemade Hollywood-style video to see how to make your breathing tube and how to calibrate it.

9 Calibrating the giant tube
Put the liter ruler at the sealed end of the tube. This end is 6 liters. Mark (with a sharpie) each interval going down from 6 L to 5 L. Scoot the ruler down and repeat, until you are at zero.

14 Cut off the extra bit, but leave enough to tape on a plastic ring.
Seal tight with masking tape!

15 Each person gets two turns to blow
Average exhale = trial 1 + trial 2, then divide by 2. Write in your notebook: Trial 1 _________________ Trial 2 _________________ Average _______________

16 Answer in your notebook in sentences:
Was your hypothesis supported? How reliable are your results? Were there any sources of error in your experiment? What are some exercises you can do to give your lungs a workout? State the main organs air passes through when you exhale. (Think of the reverse order of the respiratory system!)
