3 Identify Your network EVERYONE YOU KNOW
Your network is simply everyone you know – in both your work life and your personal life. Your extended network is people they know.   WORK RELATIONSHIPS AND PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS Begin here by thinking about key people in your network, from work and your personal life. You might start by thinking of those people who are either key contacts or those who may not be in your online social network. PEOPLE YOU DON’T KNOW BUT ARE NEEDING TO MEET Also think creatively about how you might expand your network. For example, if you’re looking for an accounting job, think about people you know who are involved in related businesses. For example, people you know may use an outside accounting or tax advisor who might know people in your targeted line of work.  Finally, consider your contact list, your address book and your cell phone contacts as great places to start.  Meetup Groups in Colorado Springs ( Complete your Worksheet (next slide)

4 Build Your List List Everyone You Know: Teammates
Family members and their network Friends and their network Sports teams Social clubs Community service groups Religious organizations Classmates Fraternity or sorority Professors Teammates School alumni and associations Former co-workers or supervisors Fellow volunteers or interns Industry associations Professional organizations Newsgroups Forums

5 Reach out to Your Network!
Use Social Media Send an Make a Phone Call Meet for Coffee or Lunch Bring or attach a summary of your background and what you’re looking for. If appropriate, share your LinkedIn or other social profile. Attach your resume to give them more background – if they request it. Tell them what you’re looking for in a job. Most people in your network won’t remember the key details of your background off the top of their head, so you’ll be doing them a favor and making it easy for them to help you.

6 How to Network with your Contacts
Guidelines: Thank them for taking time If calling – keep it brief Ask for career ideas or connections they may have Ask if they are hearing any news about growth in an industry or an employer Consider if they might give you input on your resume Ask if you can help them in any way Goals: Get two names of people to talk to that they know Learn about a target employer Learn the name of a hiring manager Learn about new companies Learn about job openings Ask for their ideas on what would match your job criteria Grow a relationship

7 Follow Up Create a tracking process (Spreadsheet, Calendar, whatever works for you) Include: Name, Phone, , Last contact Date, Key information provided, Next Contact date, etc. Follow up on leads provided and let your network partner know Realize that most employers hire through people they know and their networks! Employers value referrals from trusted colleagues and friends Your most powerful asset is the people you know (in the job search) Send Thank you notes – make sure they know you appreciate their time
