Lesson 3: Secure Your Secrets pgs

2 Think of all the ways we connect and share information with each other.
Have students come up with a list, including: , text, instant message, or specific sites: Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, xBox or connected gaming.

3 Staying connected is great, but it also opens us up to hackers and scammers.
Review: What is a phisher? What will a phisher try to do?

4 Strong Passwords: Moderate Passwords: Weak Passwords:
Easy for you to remember, but difficult for someone else (or software) to guess. Moderate Passwords: Not easy for a stranger or software to guess, but could be guessed by someone who knows you. Weak Passwords: Use personal information, are easy for anyone to guess, even if they don’t know you that well.

5 Using Passwords (or screen lock) can help keep you safe!
Use a sentence, phrase, or song lyric. Use uppercase and lowercase letters. Use numbers and symbols. Use at least 8 or more characters. Use these tips to help create a stronger password:

The Washington Capitals are my favorite hockey team! TWCamfht! Look at the stars, look how they shine for you. Ask students to come up with their own examples. Write one or two on the board.

7 and DOs DON’Ts Use a unique password for each of your important accounts. Use at least 8 characters. Use a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols . Don’t use personal information (name, address, , phone number, Social Security number, parents names, birthday, etc) or common words. Don’t use a password that’s easy to guess, like your nickname, name of your school, favorite sports team, etc. Don’t share your password with anyone other than your trusted adults.
