1 April 11 – Research Proposal and Professional Email
Comp. I April 11 – Research Proposal and Professional

2 Writing a Professional Email
Use the same skills as writing a formal essay. introduction body conclusion formal language correct grammar and mechanics varied sentence structure

3 Today’s Assignment This should be the easiest assignment of this class. HOWEVER, if you rush it, it will hurt your grade. Checklist: Did I proofread my letter for issues with language usage, grammar and mechanics, varied sentence structure, and organization? Did I attach the document that needs to be attached?

4 Research Proposal First, write a one-page research proposal for the RCE (Research Critical Essay). This proposal should be in MLA format, should follow all formal writing rules with the exception of avoiding first person. You MAY use first person in the proposal and in the , but do not over use it. Do NOT use second person in either document.

5 Research Proposal Continued
MLA Format first person is acceptable / second person is NOT acceptable one to two pages / broken into two paragraphs first paragraph: Summarize the novel you have read. Include the author’s name and the title of the book in the summary. This should only be three to seven sentences. Anything much longer than a half a page is too much for a summary. You are not retelling the entire book; you are summarizing it. second paragraph: Tell what you plan to research and then write about in your RCE.

6 Research Proposal Continued
What do I plan to write about? There are two different approaches you might consider. Literary Analysis of the Novel Argumentative Essay Regarding a Prominent Debate in Your Career Field or in the Novel

7 The Literary Analysis Approach
This approach will look very similar to the analyses you did for “New Directions” and “The Yellow Wallpaper,” but it will, of course, be longer. If using this approach, you should consider literary theory. Or, think of the following types of questions to answer (choose one-ish). What symbolism can be seen in the story and how does it prove the theme of the text? How do the character’s / characters’ actions develop the theme of the text? How does the setting contribute to the overall understanding or theme of the story?

8 The Argumentative Approach
This approach with look at a prominent debate that is occurring in your career field and how the book handles this debate. What does the book say specifically about the debate? Or, what does book contribute to the argument for one side or the other even if it does not explicitly say that it is tackling this debate?

9 Ok, so, for the second paragraph of today’s proposal, what do I need to do?
Choose an approach: literary analysis or argumentative? Write a one or two sentence answer to the provided question(s) for the appropriate approach. Explain how you are going to prove your analysis or argument. You do NOT have to have sources yet. Simply, tell what type of sources you might use. For example, for the literary analysis approach you might use scholarly voices from literary journals that discuss your book or new articles that discuss your book or author. For the argumentative approach, you might use .gov sites or any of the sites from Procon.org or the Issues and Controversies database on MGCCC’s online database that give statistics or other information relative to your debate.

10 How will this be graded? How do I turn it in? This is due at 10:10 a.m. today.
Rubric turned in through sending me an through canvas – 20 Points attachment included on the first sending – 20 Points (five points off if you forget the attachment and have to resend it) is professional and organized with NO typos – 20 Points proposal follows all formal writing requirements except that first person is acceptable – 20 Points proposal summarizes the novel and provides a clear statement of what the RCE will be about – 20 Points
