5 Historical perspective
Society Views on Men of Color Weaknesses Men Issues Place for men to call “Safe Space” or “Brave Space” Barbershop/Beauty Salon is a place where individuals can talk about anything and not be judged People want to look good Views-threatening, lazy, antisocial Weakness-taught not to tell our problems, pray about it, etc. Men’s issues-employment, relationships, mental health, income disparity, social barriers, criminal injustice

6 Theoretical framework
Dr. Strayhorn’s Sense of Belonging Dr. Tinto’s retention model Challenge and support Schlossberg’s Theory of marginality and Mattering Strayhorn’s Model-Belonging – with peers, in the classroom, or on campus – is a crucial part of the college experience. It can affect a student’s degree of academic achievement, or even whether they stay in school. Tinto’s Model (1987)-academic preparation, academic engagement, social engagement, financing college, and demographic characteristics. Schlossberg’s-focus on mattering, attention-person has interest of another, importance-others care about what you think, want, and do, ego-extension-others will be proud of your successes and failures, dependence-person can depend on someone else.

7 Barbershop program Community
Community: 500 Residents, Predominately Student Athletes Local Barbers Came Out Miracle In Love-Sex Prevention (condoms, literature, free testing, etc.) Minimal Cost for Students Largest Turnout of Athletes in approximately 18 months Plan to do a few at LSU Presented at UCF a couple of years ago and others are being executed at a couple of universities From the presentation, the former Associate VP of Student Enrollment and Services wanted to make this a university-wide program. (provide resources, support, etc.)

8 Further implications Work with involved student leaders on campus to recruit their uninvolved peers Collect data (i.e. Campus Climate Assessment) Hold Student Organization Leaders accountable for reaching out to underrepresented groups on campus Provide resources (financial and advisory) for minority student organizations Create and support groups, especially men (affinity groups) Minority student orgs.-NSBE, NAACP, NPHC, PBM, Black Leadership Council, BSU etc.
