Objective: Describe the different European settlements in the Americas. Agenda: Prayer Do Now: Look back on chapter 2.3 “The Race for Empires” pg How were the first French settlements different from the first English settlements? French went towards Great Lakes – first Settlement was in Florida, English on the Eastern coast by NC and VA French established friendly, trading relationship with the Native Americans – intermarried and learned their languages, English fought with the Native Americans French were driven out by the Spanish at first, the English mysteriously disappeared. French learned from the Natives about how to get food, English had a hard time finding food Go over answer for page 57 #1-3 all Create a chart comparing the different European settlements in the Americas.

3 Pg 57 #1-3 all 1a. The Protestant Reformation was a religious movement that was started by Martin Luther. It started in small German towns and spread throughout most of Europe. The Protestants broke away from the Catholic Church because they did not believe in all of its practices. They thought that all you needed for salvation was faith and the Bible. 1b. The printing press helped the ideas of the Reformation to spread quickly. It was also a quick way to print Bibles by the masses. This led more people to read and think about the Bible on their own instead of just relying on the priests. 1c. Martin Luther protested because of many reasons. He thought that the Church was too rich and abused its power. He also thought that religion should be simple. 2a. The first European to search for the Northwest Passage was John Cabot, an Italian sailor who funded his own expedition as long as he could settle any lands he found. The Northwest Passage was never found because it did not exist. 2b. The Dutch explorer who tried to find the Northwest Passage Henry Hudson. The French explorers were Jacques Cartier and Giovanni da Verazano. 3a. The first English settlement in North America mysteriously disappeared. They did not get help from Natives about how to find food or grow crops. Instead they fought a lot. This was called Roanoke.
