4 Math: Using the Bridges math program, students will demonstrate math reasoning through rich tasks and multiple strategies. Finding the “right” solution is no longer enough. Students must be able to defend their procedure and solution using verbal descriptions, manipulatives, and writing. Students will practice foundational math skills with the use of Xtra Math, math games and apps, and math centers. Parent letters detailing the unit of study and ways to help at home are available on our class website. *Students will be assessed informally through class discussions, journals, and demonstrations; formally through quizzes, tests, and investigations.* This is the back of flap 1 in your flip book. 6 Reading: The standards will be taught through Journeys, a balanced literacy program . This includes phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, To bring a greater depth of understanding to their reading, children will read paired nonfiction/ fiction from literature, novels, and articles. *Reading will be assessed through teacher observation and Journeys assessments.* Writing: Writing and Grammar instruction is integrated within our ELA series. The primary focus will be on the 6 +1 Traits of Writing. These traits are: organization, voice, word choice, ideas, sentence fluency, conventions, and presentation. Students will be responsible for the following writing genres: opinion, expository, fiction, and narrative. Writing will also take place across the entire 3rd grade curriculum. * Writing is assessed on a weekly basis, with a formal piece assessed at the end of each Journeys unit.* This is the back of flap 2 of your flip book. TOP of 3. Page 6, Flap 3 This is flap 3 of your flip book. Handwriting: Students will be taught a new form of cursive with a program called Handwriting Without Tears. This cursive is likely to be slightly different from what you are familiar with. Word Study: The students will be instructed in Word Study, as laid out in the Journeys program. Word Study focuses on teaching children the rules and patterns of spelling as opposed to memorizing a set list of words. *Tests are not given for Word Study. Students are expected to apply the spelling rules and patterns in their daily work. This then gets factored in as a part of their Writing Conventions score.* English Language Arts
